Description of the walk

The start point is at the Étangs du Champ de Foire.

(S/E) Head due south to the D59 and follow it to the left, towards Saint-Gilles.

(1) After about a kilometre, at the bottom of the descent, turn right onto the grassy track, a former railway line.

(2) At the crossroads, turn left, then when you reach the small road, turn right and continue to the Stop sign.

(3) Cross the D1 to take the path opposite. Follow it straight on until it ends at a place called La Rue Martin.

(4) With the road in front of you, make a quick left/right turn to take a path immediately on the left (do not go as far as the D1B). Then keep right at the Fork in the road.

(5) At the D46A, turn right for a few metres and you’ll find yourself in front of a pond. You can walk around it and stop there.
Continue along the path that runs alongside the pond on your left. You will then come out onto a small road; turn right.

(6) At the end of the bend (do not go all the way to the D1B), take a path on the left that leads into the forest. Ignore the various access points to the fields and head towards Abloux.

(7) After several hundred metres on tarmac, take the second left and follow this small road for a few metres.

(8) Head left, towards the houses of the old Abloux forges, to take the grassy path that runs alongside the first house on the right. You will cross the remains of a bridge and then admire the remaining arches and the banks of the River Abloux. On the left after the bridge, the water is deep enough for a swim.
Then retrace your steps.

(8) Follow the road to the left until you reach the D1.

(9) Cross the D1 and take the path opposite. At the crossroads, turn left.

(10) At the fork in the road, take the path on the left which climbs up the hill. Shortly after the bend, turn right onto a narrower path which will take you to the highest point.

(11) At the crossroads, turn right and head towards the Chanteloube mill, where a narrow bridge allows you to cross the river. Then head back up the road.

(12) Turn right onto the Chanteloube road and follow it to the Étangs du Champ de Foire (S/E).

Picnic tables are available at the Étang de Chassingrimont (5), as well as at the Étangs du Champ de Foire at the start (S/E).

You can swim in the river at Abloux.

On horseback or by mountain bike: allow two hours.

A lovely, enjoyable walk. Pastures, forests and sunken paths lend a real sense of authenticity
to the route.

It really is a lovely route through the countryside; you couldn’t possibly get lost. Apart from a nice little climb, there are no real difficulties, but what beautiful paths!!!!! We did it yesterday – wet feet, mind you, but it was pure joy

Thank you for your feedback; here is my detailed response:

If you’re referring to the road leading to Abloux, I had written “a few hundred metres”; I’ve just checked the map and it’s about 500 metres of tarmac, if I’m not mistaken.

As for the place-name signs, they may not always be there; in that case, you can turn on your GPS to check if you’re in the right spot.

Next, the numbers don’t quite overlap; to see this, you need to pinch-to-zoom on the screen with two fingers, and the map becomes much more precise. Finally, thank you for pointing this out; I had indeed written “stony path” because that was the case before, and I didn’t know that they’d since added tarmac.

There’s often a small problem with the route descriptions when gravel paths have actually been tarmac-surfaced on the ground (stated as 300m, but actually 1km); it’s hard to find your way, and when you arrive at the place mentioned, there are no signs to confirm you’re in the right spot.
There’s also a problem when two numbers on the map overlap – how do you find your way when the description doesn’t match reality? For example: private road
