Les Champs d'Argent

This route partly follows an old marked trail (the Volpin) which seems to have disappeared (there are a few markings near Marieux). It would appear that in the north of the Somme, the lifespan of marked trails is as short as that of hares.

It is of course possible to do only 17 km (by turning left at point 11), but the small northern circular route is very interesting.

There are very few roads and the paths are very good, but sometimes very grassy.

The route will change in May 2024, as the path between the cemetery and the church is currently blocked.

Description of the walk

Departure from Amplier, Place Serge Lefebvre, in Rue du Marais

(S/E) Head towards the D938 and immediately take the wide path on the left (before the D 938). 200 metres further on, take a path on the right that joins the D938. Cross it and take the excellent uphill path opposite. Head south on this path, which becomes narrower (very grassy at the end of July 2021), until you reach a T-junction.

(1) Turn right. After about 100 metres, turn left onto the path. You will reach a crossroads where you continue straight on towards the Bois de la Solette. Go to the end of the woods.

(2) Turn left and you will reach a T-junction with a small road. Follow it to the right and you will reach the Beauquesne cemetery (you can also start from here) and the D23. Follow it a few metres to the left, then turn left along the cemetery. Cross the orchards and you will reach a crossroads.

(3) Turn left and immediately find a three-way junction where you turn right. The path descends gently, passes under two power lines and reaches the D1 at the hamlet of Marieux.

(4) Do not take the D11, but continue straight ahead to cross the hamlet. At the T-junction, turn left to pass in front of the church, then the castle, and reach the D11 again, which you follow on the right until the junction with the D938.

(5) Follow the path on the left that runs alongside the departmental road. Join it and head straight ahead on a pretty grassy path. You will cross a wooded and slightly damp area for about 1 km. Look out for a path that branches off to the left just before a right-hand bend (you need to be careful, but the footbridge is clearly visible).

(6) Take this path, cross the stream (Fossé de Marieux) and reach the D938.
Cross it and take the path opposite. After a few metres, turn right onto a path that will take you to Sarton (quite a lot of nettles at the end of July 2021, but it's passable). You will come to a small road, which you follow opposite until you reach the crossroads.

(7) Turn left, then immediately left again. A good path takes you back to the ridge.

(8) At the top, turn right onto the grassy path. After 600 metres, the path turns 90° to the right (and becomes very grassy). At the T-junction, turn left and rejoin the ridge.

(9) Turn right at the hairpin bend onto Montagne Blanche. Stay on this good descending path, heading north, and ignore a path on the right. You will arrive near the D938.

(10) Just before the road, turn left onto a grassy path that passes to the left of the houses. Join a small road and follow it to the right. Cross the D938 and you will soon reach a crossroads (calvary).

(11) Ignore a path on the left (calvary) and then immediately Rue du Moulin on the right (it's a dead end, unfortunately). Cross the Authie and continue along the road for about 200 metres.

(12) At the intersection, go straight ahead. At the stop sign, turn right and continue to a crossroads.

(13) Then turn left onto the D24 towards Halloy. There's quite a climb! Continue until you reach the last houses in the village.

(14) Turn right onto the path that runs alongside the main road, then veer away from it to cross a small wood. Ignore the paths on the right. At the top of the hill, you will reach a small road.

(15) Follow it to the left and rejoin the D24 in the hamlet of Caumesnil (a short detour to the left allows you to see the elegant château and its dovecote).

(16) Turn right, ignoring the path that veers sharply to the left. A few metres further on, leave the D24 and take the street on the left (Rue des Rouvroys). Continue to the end until you reach a barrier.

(17) Take the path on the left. It turns right to cross the woods (the route is marked accurately on the map). After a soft and slightly congested section (fallen trees), the path becomes very good. At the edge of the woods, find a path on the left.

(18) Take this path and you will reach a T-junction.

(19) Turn right and stay on the small road until you reach the D 24. Follow it for a few metres to the left and turn right into Rue Joseph Bellet. You will reach a T-junction that you passed on the way there.

(12) Turn right, in the opposite direction to the outward journey, and cross the Authie again. You will reach the crossroads and calvary you passed on the outward journey (just before the D938).

(11) Take the path on the right. This is a pleasant path, a little damp in places, which runs alongside the D938 through the undergrowth (there are a few tree trunks to climb over or go around). Follow it to the road and turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

As usual, good shoes and one or two walking sticks are essential.

There is probably a water source in the cemeteries, but not during the cold season.

Worth a visit

Marieux Church and Castle.
Caumesnil Castle.
Beautiful carpet of daffodils after point (6) in spring.

An easy hike that took just over four hours.
I did not encounter anyone.
The paths remain passable even with the mud in mid-February.
A beautiful route with varied landscapes.

Hello,

It was with great pleasure that I went on this hike (August 2021).

There are very few roads and most of the paths are very easy to walk on.

Be careful on the northern circular route (points 17 to 18):

The path through this wood is not clearly marked on the ground (no signposts). It is therefore easy to get lost:

- Either you take your compass and follow the path indicated on the 1:25,000 IGN map, as the route corresponds to the actual terrain,

- Or you can subscribe to the IGN RANDO app on the IGN RANDO website - IGN RANDO' subscription - IGN Libertés map subscription - 12 months + IPHIGÉNIE subscription.
In this case, simply follow your progress in REAL TIME on your IPHIGÉNIE app. You will easily find your way out of the woods. You will then need to reach the cemetery via a small grassy path.

In summary, this is an easy, very pleasant route, with a little extra care required between points 17 and 18.

Kind regards.

I completed this hike on 20 July 2021.

The car park on the side of the D 938 was cluttered with piles of materials, so I adopted your starting point.
It's nice, so I modified the hike.

The trails were very grassy, but that's better than mud. There weren't too many nettles except after waypoint 6, but that section is short.
I also discovered a new trail after waypoint 18, which allows you to avoid some of the tarmac.

It had been a long time since I'd been to this area in summer and I really enjoyed it!

Indeed, I have already experienced poorly maintained paths in the Somme. Even GRs!

I also intend to buy gaiters, and I don't care if people think I'm a clown In any case, I hardly ever meet anyone when I'm hiking, except for farmers in the fields...

I thought the path between points 5 and 6 had disappeared long ago, and I was surprised to find it in excellent condition this spring. When it's really bad, you can take the D 938, but it's much less pleasant.

Unfortunately, our paths are not well maintained, and this is particularly true in this part of the Somme (I had confirmation of this again this morning between Outrebois and Mézerolles).

Since last year, I have been wearing high gaiters again. According to my wife, they look a bit clownish with shorts, but when you encounter nettles, what a relief!

Hello Joorange,
First of all, I should point out that I did this hike in the opposite direction to what you planned. In fact, I preferred to start from Place Serge Lefebvre, Rue du Marais in Amplier. It's safer than the roadside near the roundabout, as you decided. Starting from the square, you can take the path that comes from waypoint 11 directly. Just remember to turn right towards waypoint 1 if you want to do it in the "right" direction
This route is quite interesting historically, with Orville and Marieux, among others. I enjoyed discovering a region I knew nothing about, and there are some very beautiful sections, such as when the path overlooks the Amplier valley!
However, apart from the historical context, I didn't particularly enjoy the northern circular route. I find it more enjoyable in the "From Montagne Blanche to the Amplier Valley" hike.
Otherwise, I didn't encounter any particular difficulties. The path between waypoint 11 and the finish was muddy due to the previous days' rain, but still passable. I'm not sure it will remain so in autumn and winter when the rains are more frequent. The worst part (because I hike in shorts) is between waypoints 5 and 6, where the path is overgrown with vegetation.
Thank you again for this beautiful hike!
