The Bois des Bouloies in Barly

I used the start of an old marked trail (Sentier de la Fontaine) which, like many in this area, has disappeared. The route takes you through the Bois des Bouloies and, after passing through Occoches, the return journey follows wide farm tracks.

You can have a picnic in the square. You can follow this up with the “Les pâtis au départ de Barly” walk for a total of 20 km.

Description of the walk

Start at Place de la Mairie in Barly.

(S/E) Leave the square, with the town hall on your left, and at the fork in the road facing the woods, turn left onto the D196. Walk uphill until you reach a fork in the road.

(1) Leave the D196, then turn right, then immediately left to reach a junction.
Carry on straight ahead and head towards the woods. You’ll reach a Fork in the road.

(2) Turn left (still signposted in yellow) onto a fairly easy path which then crosses the woods; join a small road, cross it to take the path opposite (slightly stonier) and finish crossing the woods.
Next, a grassy path leads to a fork in the road where you’ll find a wider track.

(3) Turn right and stay on this wide, downhill path, which eventually joins the D938 after passing through the Bois d’Occoches.

(4) Follow it to the right and, 150 m further on, turn left to reach the village of Occoches. (“Occoches, oh town of love!”) and head towards the church.

(5) Then take the street on the right (Rue Neuve) to rejoin the D938. Cross it to take the small road opposite, pass the castle (on the right) and reach a Fork in the road.

(6) Turn right and follow the path north-east, then north-west, until you reach a T-junction.

(7) Turn right. 300 m further on, take the path on the left and you’ll reach a small road.

(8) Follow it for about 300 m to the left, then turn right towards the Bois Saint-Laurent. Ignore the path on the right that leads into the woods and continue until you reach a small road.

(9) Follow it to the right along the edge of the woods. At the Fork in the road, turn left to return to the Place de la Mairie de Barly (S/E).

Notes

In the countryside, the paths are very good, but crossing the woods can be trickier depending on the weather conditions.
So make sure you wear good walking shoes and carry at least one walking stick.

A pleasant hike, alternating between wooded areas and plateaus with crops. Best done when it's not too hot, as there are many open areas.

If you have a look at my blog – which I’d encourage you to do 😉 – you’ll get a good idea. It’s the latest hike I’ve posted about.

But otherwise, when you’re coming from Outrebois, the path is indeed overgrown. A faint trail remains, thanks to the few walkers who we imagine still pass through there. Thanks to the wildlife, too. It’s easier towards Mézerolles.

What was the path round the blue ponds like (before point 8?)

I suppose there’s still no access to the ponds… It’s a shame to leave such a lovely spot neglected!

Hello,

I combined this route with the one called “Les Fontaines Bleues from Barly” to make a circular route of around 18 km.

This walk offers an interesting mix of woodland and farmland, from which we can enjoy lovely views of the region.

We also pass through several small villages with a rich, little-known history. Do visit the Nord Picardie Regional Tourist Office website to see that this walk has far more to offer than it might seem at first glance.

In any case, for anyone seeking absolute tranquillity and a connection with nature, you certainly won’t go wrong by coming here to explore the paths! But do opt for spring or late summer when the weather is dry and not too hot if, like me, you’re not keen on mud or sweltering heat.

Thanks again, Joorange, for these lovely suggestions. I’m a big fan!

But I do still sometimes get it wrong when following my own routes!!!
