The quarries of Bavaisis

Place de Gussignies car park

(S/E) Leave Rue de la Place and turn right onto Rue Émile Sohier. At the four-way intersection, turn right onto Vieux Chemin de Bavay. Continue straight ahead until you reach Chaussée Brunehaut

(1) Turn right onto Rue Virginette, which then becomes Rue de Cotipont. Before the bridge over the Hogneau and the Marble Museum, turn left onto Rue du Riez du Bois.

(2) Turn right onto Rue du Riez du Bois. At the crossroads, turn right onto Rue du Moulin.
After the bridge, turn left onto Rue de la Place.

(3) Before the fork, turn right onto Rue Millet. Opposite the church, go around the roundabout and turn left onto Rue du Château.

(4) At the white cross, turn right onto Rue du Stade. At the T-junction, turn right onto Route de Bettrechies (D224).

(5) After the railway bridge, turn right onto Rue d'en Bas, drive alongside the quarry and the Bavay River, which you will cross after 350 metres.

(6) At the Y-junction, turn left onto Rue des Paturettes, take the first road on the left, Rue de Meaurain, and pass in front of the town hall.

(7) At the fork, turn right onto Rue de Saint-Waast and leave a path on your right. At the T-junction, turn left and then follow the road on the left called Chemin de la Tour. Pass the Tour farm on your left and continue on the right, following the N49.

(8) At the T-junction where you can see a blockhouse on the right, turn left onto Rue du Vieux Chemin and go under the motorway. Continue along Rue du Vieux Chemin and take the^second right onto Rue Laurent Niogret.
When you reach the main road, turn left. Pass the church.

(9) At the fork, turn right onto Chemin des Boules.

(10) Turn right onto Chemin du Pissotiau, then at the four-way intersection, turn left onto Rue du Pissotiau.
At the fork, turn left and continue along Rue du Pissotiau. At the four-way intersection, continue straight ahead.

(11) At the T-junction at Pont de Rametz, turn left onto Rue du Quesnoy (D942) towards Bavay town centre. Cross the railway line and continue along Rue de la Gare.

(12) At the fork, turn right onto Rue de la Gare and turn right at the T-junction.

(13) At the traffic lights, turn left onto Rue de Gommeries towards Bavay town centre.
Take the^second right onto Rue Saint Maur, pass the Town Hall and Place Charles de Gaulle, then turn left onto Rue des Glatignies. Continue along Rue de Valenciennes and at the roundabout, take the^first right onto Rue des Platanes, then the^first left onto Rue d'Hon. Pass under the N49 bridge.

(14) At the fork, turn right onto Rue des Palans (D84), which becomes Chaussée du Bois further on.

(15) Turn left onto Chemin du Chemineau. At the end of the road, turn right onto Rue du Tonkin and continue straight ahead.

(16) At the four-way intersection, continue straight ahead on Rue Maxime Ansleau, then take the^first right onto Rue de la Gare.
Then turn left onto Rue Laurent Niogret, towards the church in Hon.

(17) At the church, turn left onto Rue Gaston Genarte towards the town hall. Pass one road on the left and two on the right
then another lane on the left.

(18) Turn left onto Rue Gaston Genarte and continue straight ahead.

(19) At the chapel, turn left onto Rue de la Marne.

(20) At the end, at the Jesus Marie Joseph Chapel, turn left onto Rue de la Marne.

(21) At the T-junction, turn right then left onto Rue Wilson, which becomes Rue des Rocs further on.

(22) Turn right onto Rue d'Athis (RD305). Take the^first left, Rue de la Carrière, and cross the quarry.

(23) Turn right at the^first street and, at the T-junction, turn right onto Chemin d'Héricamp.

(24) At the end, continue straight ahead along Rue de la Maniette. At the four-way junction, turn left. The woods are on your left and then on your right.

(25) At the four-way junction, turn right onto Chaussée Brunehaut. Cross the French-Belgian border. Pass a junction and continue straight ahead.

(26) Turn left onto Rue Tonin.

(27) Turn right onto Rue Grande, then left onto Rue d'Autreppe.

(28) Turn right, then left about a hundred metres further on.

(29) Turn right onto Chemin de la Maladrerie, which becomes Rue Boutenier further on. Cross the border again.

(30) Turn right onto Rue des Sartiaux, which continues onto Rue du Fond des Rocs.
Pass in front of the "Au Baron" brasserie and continue straight ahead onto Rue du Bourlard.

(31) Take the^first right, then right again to return to Place de Gussignies (S/E).

Be careful along the RD24.

Follow the white and green directional signs depicting a bicycle, sometimes supplemented by the name of the route, "Les carrières du Bavaisis".
