Legate from Lekaroz (Baztan)

Legate (870 m) is one of the most picturesque peaks in the Baztan valley. Located to the North of Elizondo, the view from the summit is 360°, with Askolegi dominating the Bertiz park. Below, a majestic calvary leads the way back to the hamlet of Lekaroz.

Description of the walk

Arriving in Elizondo on the N121, follow a series of traffic circles around the town. Turn right at the 4th traffic circle, towards Lekaroz. The car park is on the right as you enter the hamlet.

(S/E) From the car park, head North on the asphalt road.

(1) Turn right, then left about 50 m further on, and continue North until you reach a fork in the road.

(2) Leave the road on the left and follow a wide track to a four-way junction.

(3) Leave the wide track by turning right, and follow a path which climbs due North through undergrowth.

(4) Continue to the right and reach an asphalt road. Follow it to the left for a few dozen mothers, then leave it on the right for a shortcut that takes you back to the road above.

(5) Turn right to follow this road, which quickly turns North-West, and reaches a fork in the road.

(6) Go left (South) on the asphalt road, then turn right to head North again. Take care to stay on course, leaving behind the various cross-country paths.

(7) Leave the road by turning left into the undergrowth and descend until you find a track.

(8) Follow the track towards the South, then South-West.

(9) Fork left, keep left at the crow's-foot and continue to a marked right-hand bend.

(10) Go straight ahead to follow a path that climbs due South and then heads West along the ridge. Continue to the summit of Legate (870 m).

(11) Head due South to the calvary below, then descend South-East towards Lekaroz, following the stages of the Way of the Cross indicated by stone markers.

(12) Turn left, heading South-East, and follow this direction to reach the car park in the hamlet of Lekaroz (S/E).

Reliable GPS track except on the way down before reaching hill 390 (halfway between point 12 and the finish, a straight stretch! ), the track gets lost in a meadow. Do not follow it and continue on the path that rejoins the track 300 m below. The GPS seems to have been switched off and on again further down.
Nice hike

the junction at point 12 is barely visible due to the reshaping of the track elsewhere - the section of path that descends from point 12 towards 600m is almost impassable due to the brambles and gorse that have completely overgrown it.

Be sure to follow the route with a GPS or smartphone: points 7/8/9 are difficult to find in the forest because the ground is covered with a thick layer of leaves.
A very pretty summit with a great viewpoint.
On the long descent, quite steep at the start, then a good section overgrown with brambles and thorns.
The route is well done and essential.
The end of the descent is easier, with a view of the very pretty village of Lekaroz.

We followed this trail on Thursday 12 10 2023 in exceptionally fine weather.
We struggled a bit to follow the trail from km 9 to km 9.7 through the cedars. It would have been easier to continue along the right path at km 9, but that's part of the fun of hiking.
