The start is in the village of Azpilkueta, which can be reached via the N121-B from the border at Dantxaria, then the NA-4457. There are a few parking spaces along the street, but these may be full in summer.
(S/E) Walk up to the top of the village where the tarmac road gives way to two concrete tracks: take the one on the right, heading uphill towards the north. After three hairpin bends to the left, you’ll reach a Y-junction.
(1) Take the track on the right, heading north-west uphill; this is one of the variants of the Haute Route des Pyrénées (HRP) which passes over the Col d’Atxuela (Atxuelako lepoa in Basque).
(2) Turn right, heading north on theGR®11, to go round the summit of Atxuela.
(3) Leave theGR®11and take the path branching off to the right towards the north-east. Keep heading in this direction until you reach the edge of a forest, then continue to a junction of six paths.
(4) Turn right, heading south, onto a track that descends along the ridge and then down the hillside. Ignore the turn-offs to the left until you reach a large agricultural shed.
(5) Turn right, then take a hairpin bend to the left and, further on, a circular loop to the right.
(6) Turn right, heading west, onto thePR®-NA-4 path to return to the car park (S/E).
