Moulin de l'Enfer and Palacio de Azkolegi

A lovely walk through the heart of the Bastan valley, starting from the Etchebertzekoborda restaurant and passing by the beautifully restored “Moulin de l’Enfer” and the Palacio de Aizkolegi (at the top of the Bertiz estate).

Description of the walk

Access: By car, on arriving at Dantcharia, take the N121B towards Pamplona. Once you reach the Otxondo Pass, continue for about 200 to 300 metres, then turn right towards Orabidéa onto a narrow, winding road for about 11 km. Follow the sign for "Etchebertzekoborda" carefully. Park in the restaurant car park next to the wall on the left.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the sign for “infernuko errota” (Hell’s Mill). The path descends gently along the right bank through woods of oak, chestnut and alder trees. Cross a small wooden bridge and continue left along the path which climbs and heads towards the steep-sided valley of Infernuko Erreka. The path then descends again to another fork. Continue left and reach the “Infernuko Erreka” flour mill, built in a very narrow section of the valley.

(1) Then head back and cross the stream to the right via a small wooden bridge. Follow a path that winds through the forest and climbs steeply; go round the Barrentxea farmhouse on the left. Go through the gate and take the path to a very sharp right-hand bend.

(2) At the bend, leave the path and take a trail into the forest on the left.

(3) You’ll come to a track; follow it to the left, slightly downhill.

(4) At a three-way junction, continue straight ahead; do not turn right. You will come out onto a concrete road; walk about 50 metres to the left.

(5) Turn right onto another small concrete road and follow it for about 150m as it climbs towards Elizondo.

(6) Leave this road and take a path on the right. The path narrows and is often on a slope.

(7) At the junction, turn left onto a track that leads to the concrete road, keeping straight on at every junction you come to.

(8) Continue left along the concrete road. Pass a pretty farmhouse and arrive at the Col de Plaza Zélaï.

(9) Leave the road, go through the gate at the Domaine de Bertiz, walk down for a few metres and take a path towards Aizkolegi (a fairly steep climb through the forest).

(10) The path joins the main park track, which you should take to the right.

(11) Leave the grassy path on your right (which you will follow on the descent) and continue to the summit of Azkilogi (841m).

(12) From the “Palacio”, splendid views of the mountains with a panoramic viewpoint. Head back down the track.

(11) Leave the track and turn left to follow a grassy path slightly downhill to a small cairn.

(13) At the cairn, turn right onto a path through the forest to the Bagoléa "casa rural".

(14) At Bagoléa, continue straight on along a path that descends, passing above Mokorreko Borda. Continue straight on along a concrete track that climbs, passing another "casa rural".

(15) Once at the end of the concrete track, continue along a path that continues round Ekiondi and leads to the Erroitegi borda. Head down towards the stream and cross the old bridge.

(16) From the bridge, climb up the other side along a well-marked path to the track leading to the Baztanen Borda farmhouse.

(17) Take this track to the right, pass in front of the farmhouse and continue. Signs for "Infernuko Errota" will guide you.

(1) Pass just above the Mill of Hell and rejoin the track taken at the start. Continue to the right and return to the restaurant and car park at Etchebertzekoborda (S/E).

Notes

There is a drinking water point at Bagoléa (14).
Watch out for ferns in the height of summer; they can grow quite tall.
If the weather is fine, a picnic at the Palacio de Aizkolegi is very pleasant.

Worth a visit

Visit to Bertiz Park.
You can have a drink and/or a meal at the Etxebertzekoborda restaurant (closed on Wednesdays).

The walk is far too long for how uninteresting the route is, but the panoramic view is truly superb and the palace is very beautiful.
It might be a bit of a struggle for some because of the length
The only difficult part is the climb up to the Domaine de Bertiz
From the small cairn, the path you take to the right is really lovely right up to point 15 – I really enjoyed it
There is a place to park the car near the entrance to the estate for those who just want to see the palace and the panoramic view.

The hike is a leisurely walk, not a race

Enjoy the walk, everyone

A very long walk… through the forest, as 80% of the route is through woodland.
The route is currently changing:
at point 1 near Barrentxea, the owner has put up two locked gates. You have to go round them.
between points 6 and 8, the path has become a playground for ‘green’ motorbikes, which are tearing up the track and creating numerous misleading tracks. Given the way these ‘friendly’ bikers are destroying the route, there won’t be much left after the next winter downpours...
The cairn at point 13 is almost invisible (has it been dismantled?). Be careful: if you continue along the path, you’ll reach a dead end after 2 km and will have to retrace your steps. (PS: a cairn is a pile of stones, for those who don’t carry a dictionary with them.)

Honestly, I’m disappointed by how little of the view there is, given the area and the effort involved.

A really lovely hike. It’s classified as difficult, and it certainly is.
