The Moulin d'Enfer and the GR®11 loop from Etxebertzeko Borda

A beautiful hike through a forest of oak, beech and spruce.
Here, green dominates.
There are many sights to see, including a beautifully renovated mill and lime kilns that bear witness to Navarre's history.
At the top of the hike, a beautiful view of the Basque country on the French side, and of the sea if the sky is clear.

Description of the walk

By car: from France, head for Aïnhoa and cross the border at Dantxaria. Continue on the N-121-B.
Climb to the Otxondo pass. 500 m further on, turn right onto the NA-4453 for about 10 km and
reach the Etxebertzeko Borda restaurant car park.

(S/E) From the car park, take the path signposted Infernuko Errota (Hell's Mill).

(1) At the fork in the road, turn left onto Infernuko Errota.

(2) Go left, back and forth, to the mill and visit it. Retrace your steps.

(2) Climb left to continue along the path (green and white markings).

(3) Approx. 1.5 km further on, at a crossroads, turn right, leaving the Green & White markings. 200 m further on, turn left and climb this track, turning right at the next fork.

(4) After 800 m, take the right-hand hairpin bend.

(5) 10 m before a left-hand bend, you'll come across a remarkable pollarded oak trunk, and turn left-all before this bend in the track. Go straight ahead at a crossroads. Reach a plateau.

(6) At this plateau-crossing with a large cistern, turn right at right-angles.
Take care to leave the 1st track on your right.

(7) Reach the GR®11 and follow it to the right. Leave a track on the right. Continue on the GR®.

(8) At an imposing tree marked GR®11, leave this track and turn right, due South.

(9) Continue left, passing 60m above a small farm (see explanation in practical info). Continue on this track.

(10) The track overhangs the road, continue straight ahead.

(11) Downhill, just before reaching the Lizardiko farm, turn left along the fence. On this descent, look out for the lime kilns.

(1) Rejoin the Moulin d'Enfer path taken on the outward journey and continue left to the car park (S/E).

Notes

(8) shelter 100m further down the GR®11, in an old lime kiln
(9) water point at the farm
(10) in case of weather, fatigue, injury or other problems: take the road, you're 1.5km from the cars.

In some places, looking at the map can make you feel lost.

For example, at (6) OpenStreetMap hiking (World) is much less explicit than IGN Spain when it comes to finding your way. Don't hesitate to juggle the two throughout your hike.

Worth a visit

Sights: the mill, lime kilns and many magnificent trees.
The owners, Maïté and Martin, are charming and very welcoming. If you let them know a few days in advance, they can prepare a snack or small meal for you...there's even sleeping accommodation for 6 people. 034 686 25 39 58 or 034 943 96 93 35.
The Etxebertzeko Borda restaurant is a safe address.

A very shaded route, ideal in hot weather, running alongside a stream at the start. No major difficulties. Next time, I'll try the restaurant at the starting point, which is also the finish line.

The route was chosen so that we could have lunch afterwards at the Etxebertzekoborda restaurant.
A pleasant walk in the forest, but with views of the surrounding mountains.
We went to the Zamatelua summit (alt. 684m) and between points 9 and 11 we took a path that leads directly to point 11.
