Description of the walk

Park on the outskirts of Coutures, on Rue de la Pompe, opposite the farm near the wayside cross.

(S/E) Take the path that climbs up to reach the junction with the Route Forestière de la Marchande in the woods.

(1) Turn right onto this track, continue through the woods and then reach the edge of the woodland.

(2) Stay along the edge of the woods until you reach a Fork in the road at the end of this track.

(3) Turn right to re-enter the Forêt Domaniale de la Marchande. Take the path leading down to the left, marked with a yellow line on a tree. Stay on this path and, further along on the left, you’ll find the daffodils.

(4) Turn back and follow the route in reverse to return to the car park on the outskirts of Coutures (S/E).

Already done – there really are far more daffodils! And, if I remember correctly, in a lovely woodland!

It’s better to park in the village (a further 150 metres) than opposite the farm, as the verges aren’t stabilised and you risk getting stuck in the mud. The route is easy to follow, but once you reach point 4… the forest has been cleared and you really have to search hard to find a few daffodils – the main attraction of the walk – amongst the ferns and undergrowth. In short, a bit of a let-down!

It’s a shame to let a patch of daffodils be trampled underfoot. They look so much lovelier in the wild. Despite the advice and reminders of the law, people snap them all up to keep in their measly little vases for just a few days 🙁🙁

The directions to the starting point aren’t very clear: from the edge of the village, you do need to head up towards the farm (a modern barn), but we didn’t see a wayside cross, and there’s nowhere to park there.
But apart from that, the walk is magnificent, and there are plenty of daffodils!!
