Start: from the Béhobie border, take the N-121-A, direction Pamplona. 28 km after the border,
take the Doneztebe / Santesteban exit. Cross the first bridge at the entrance to the town,
then the second at the exit. Turn left immediately after the bridge to park in the large free
car park.
(S/E) Take the small road beside the Ameztiko River. Follow it southwards on the right for about 50 m, then turn right to climb up a concrete track.
(1) At the top of this first climb, at the three-way junction, keep to the left. The track gains altitude.
(2) Turn right and continue uphill.
(3) In a left-hand hairpin bend, you'll find a small series of pigeon huts and a sheepfold. This is a very pleasant place to take your first break. Continue along the same track.
(4) Further on, at a three-way junction, turn left. You'll come to a line of pigeon-houses on your left, then a small group of houses, and continue for about 500 m.
(5) At a pigeon hunting lodge, leave the track and follow a path down to the left. The village of Itturen can be seen below. At the bottom of the descent, turn left onto a small path below a track which leads to a house. A little further on, at a three-way junction, turn left. The track becomes a path which descends well. At the bottom, this path joins a sheepfold.
(6) Take a sharp right onto a marked GR® (Red and White) trail. This is also the Ruta del agua (water route), marked with a blue water drop.
(7) At the start of a climb, leave the Ruta del agua and stay on the track to the right (not down to the river). The track rises in long, winding stretches. Follow a wall made of large hewn stones.
(8) 200 m further on, leave the track and descend to the left. Just after passing a barn, keep to the right.
(9) Approximately 500 m further on, notice an original plantation of cypress trees, up to 30 m high, along a fence.
(E) Further on, the track becomes a path, and the descent becomes steeper. Continue gently to the car park (S/E).
