Park in the car park at Conzieu cemetery.
(S/E) Walk past the cemetery. Take the path down to the village of Conzieu. At the bottom of the path, take the road on the left for 30 metres, then turn right into Rue des Lacs and walk down to the river.
(1) Cross the bridge and take the road on the right. After a hairpin bend, you will come to a fork.
(2) Leave the road on your right, which you will return to later. Follow the road straight ahead, which will become a good path: you are now on theGR®59(red and white markings). Follow theGR® along the Lacs de Conzieu until you reach a road, where you leave it.
Take the road on the right until it ends, 100 m further on.
(3) At the end of the road, take a path on the right, which quickly begins to climb.
The slope becomes quite steep for 300 m.
(4) As you pass, a small gap allows you to see the Conzieu Lakes.
You will reach a pine forest and the path will become almost flat. After 300 m, on a path littered with trees felled by previous storms, you will come to a beautiful carriage road.
(5) Turn right. The path descends for 750 m and arrives at a fork.
(6) Leave a good path that descends to the left towards Saint-Benoît, and also leave a poor path that branches off to the right. Continue straight ahead on the good path that leads to Mont Pela, which you will leave on your right.
After another kilometre, you will reach a fork where the road from Groslée joins.
(7) Take the path on the right that descends for 500 m until you reach another fork.
(8) Take the path on the right and follow the small Lac de Crotel, which is almost invisible through the trees. After 1 km on this path, when it starts to climb slightly, a trail branches off at a 90° angle to the left and climbs very steeply. Take this trail and, after 30 m, join theGR®59.
(9) An electricity pole marks the point where you start to descend back onto the GR®. The path descends through the rocks, where a few steps have been carved out. Be careful, as some sections are slippery.
Follow this path downhill until you reach a good track that takes you back to the bridge in the village of Conzieu and the car park (S/E).
And as I walk a bit faster... I did it in under 3 hours... but I stopped for lunch in the wooded section, which was lovely at this time of year when there’s no one around.
. There is a steep climb above the lake, where the vegetation tries to prevent you from passing. Then, at the end, there is a nice descent down a staircase carved into the rock.
Easy hike except for the path from the starting point (9), which is narrow and slippery. The rest is perfect
