Le Roc la Tour in the Château-Regnault Forest

For those who enjoy forests and elevation changes, and at the heart of the walk, the Roc la Tour is characterised by its quartzite columns, likely remnants of the Château du Diable. Here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Ardennes forest.

Description of the walk

Warning: 20/02/2023. For environmental reasons, access to the upper part of the Corpias cliff (9) is prohibited at certain times of the year. In this case, follow the GR® from points (8) to (10).

Departure from Thilay, Place de l'Église.

(S/E) Take Rue Eva Thomé (on the right opposite the church), continue left at the fork into Rue Émile Faynot, then continue on the Transsemoisienne to reach the old Naux station (footbridge closed since March 2025).

(1) Turn left towards the old Moulin de la Gire, pass in front of it and follow the Ruisseau de la Gire stream to the Route Forestière de la Dauphinée (tarmac road).

(2) Turn left to cross to the right bank of the stream and take a small path immediately on the left. Continue along the path, always choosing the right-hand path until you reach some boulders.

(3) Turn right towards the forest road (elevation 405).

(4) As you approach the forest road, descend to the left. The path makes several hairpin bends. At the third bend, turn right to reach the start of a small stream (a tributary of the Gire) which you cross via a small wooden bridge.

(5) Continue straight ahead until you reach the Route Forestière des Éteignères.

(6) Turn right, heading south-west between forest plots 167 and 168 (not marked on maps). Continue until you reach a small ditch marking the boundary between the municipalities of Thilay and Monthermé.

(7) Cross this ditch and turn right to walk along this boundary (not marked on maps). The path turns left and joins an uphill path. Follow it to the right to reach the Roc La Tour site.

(8) Turn left, heading south-west, and descend, first on the GR® then on a rocky path, to the top of the Roche aux Corpias climbing site: caution is advised at this point!

(9) Continue left on the path, which changes direction (east) before joining the GR®.

(10) Cross the GR® to continue opposite along the edge of the national forest. Follow the ditch that marks the boundary and quickly turn left. After about 150 m, turn right. Go straight ahead (north-east). Cross the Chemin de la Source du Charnois on the right-hand side and pass the source of the Ru de Desnigel slightly below. Continue north-east and climb uphill. At the top of the climb, you will come to a crossroads.

(11) Take the path that descends to the right. Reach the Route Forestière des Éteignères and follow it to the right. Turn right again at the next crossroads (elevation 217). Stay on the GR® which branches off to the right until you reach Chemin de la Source du Charnois (elevation 209).

(12) Leave the GR® at this point, turning left onto a slightly downhill path. At the next two crossroads, turn right to reach Thilay cemetery.

(13) Go around it on the left and reach the cemetery gate. With your back to the gate, head opposite towards a rocky path that descends to the war memorial.

(14) Take Rue du Moulin opposite, then Rue Eva Thomé on the right to reach the Naux car park below the footbridge (S/E).

Hello
I was delighted to discover this hike. It was a truly wonderful day in the Ardennes woods with superb views at Roc La Tour and Les Corpias. The staff map or Visorando IGN map is a great help when walking on trails that are rarely or never marked.
It allows you to walk in truly unspoilt natural surroundings.
