Mont Thabor via the refuge

A superb hike on the border between Savoie and the Hautes Alpes, almost in Italy.
Tormented landscapes, high mountains, a chapel at over 3,150 metres, lakes, snowfields, and a bit of contemporary history, as a large part of the route has only been French territory since 1947.

Description of the walk

Park at Le Lavoir (1,923 m), which can be reached via a track from the Val Fréjus resort in the commune of Modane.

(S/E) From the car park, head south-west along the track, which is theGR®5, towards the Mont Thabor refuge.
After a climb with a few steeper sections, you will reach Losa 2099m, a small dam on the Charmaix stream.
Continue climbing along the track. A little further up, theGR®5splits in two.

(1) Continue on the left-hand route; the right-hand route descends into the valley and then climbs back up to join the other section. Pass Replanette (2,282 m), Baraque Poste (2,350 m) and Grande Montagne (2,405 m).
The track, which has now become a path, reaches the Col de Vallée Étroite (2,443 m), which marks the boundary between the departments of Savoie and Hautes-Alpes.

(2) At the Col de la Vallée Étroite, leave theGR®5by turning right to reach the Refuge du Mont Thabor at 2,502 m in 15 minutes, which you will have already seen during the ascent.
Allow between 2 and 2½ hours to reach the refuge from the car park.

(3) From the refuge, descend to the Col de la Vallée Étroite

(2). At the pass, you can turn right at the small lake onto theGR®57for direct access to Mont Thabor: 3 hours 15 minutes; this will be the return route.

Another option (chosen): head left of the small lake on theGR®5.

(4) Descend the valley to the Tavernette plain at approximately 2,200 metres.
On the descent, look for a torrent rushing down the western slope and a small path running alongside it.

(5) In the plain, cross the stream and its branches to find the unmarked path, which is sometimes marked with cairns but is clearly visible.
Follow the stream on its right bank to reach Lac du Peyron. In the meantime, a few marmots will have fled as you approach.

(6) At the lake, you will find the direct route again. Follow theGR® trail to the left. The path will approach a section that climbs steeply.
Then, on a less steep section, it runs along the jagged ridge of Grand Séru. The chapel visible on the ridge still seems far away.

(7) At the Col des Méandes (2,727 m), you will reach the junction with the trails coming from the Clarée Valley, and the traditional "bonjour" from hikers will often become "buongiorno".
From the pass, the rest of the route is fairly straightforward: there are 450m left to climb, up and up along a winding, steep path. Allow 1½ hours, including breaks.
Before the final climb, a small plateau at an altitude of 3,063 metres allows you to catch your breath.

(8) At the summit, if you haven't already done so, take a moment to admire the scenery. The return journey follows the same route in reverse, but take the direct option

(9) Col des Méandes, Lac du Peyron, a long traverse with alternating ascents and descents to reach the Col de la Vallée Etroite, then a direct descent to the Lavoir (S/E).

For late risers, the walk can begin in the early afternoon; just arrive a little before the meal, which is served at 7 p.m.

Worth a visit

Don't miss the Sainte-Marguerite Lakes, located right next to the refuge.

not many people on the route, except from the Col des Méandres (Névache and Valloire trails) onwards, with more than 200 people at the summit... but the summit is spacious and there's room for everyone.

i found that the loop after the Col de Vallée Étroite was of little interest except for adding elevation (about 200m)

you can do a loop on the section between La Loza and the refuge, either on the way up or on the way back. (Loop with no additional elevation gain.

no water along the way except at the refuge.

a parish-specific to Brittany, beautiful hike offering a wide variety of mineral formations with no difficulties apart from the elevation gain

thank you

Hello, Thank you for this route. Completed on Sunday in 7 hours 30 minutes - 23 km and 1,588 m elevation gain and loss.
At the Col de la Vallée Étroite, we climbed up to the right for direct access to Thabor.
We did the loop on the way down: Lac du Peyron - descent to the Tavernette plain - climb back up to the Col de la Vallée Étroite.
We spent the night at the Gite des Tavernes in Valfréjus. I highly recommend it. Super friendly and the evening meal was really good and plentiful.
Enjoy your hike!

In addition to the excellent guidebook by the creator of this route, which I have already completed five times in the summer more or less on this course, here is some additional information:

To my knowledge, this is the only 3,000-metre peak that is marked with GR signs from start to finish! It is therefore ideal for a first 3,000-metre peak without taking any risks. In my opinion, the main difficulty is the noticeable thinning of the oxygen above 2,800 metres, but otherwise it is a very good hike with no problems.

A few noteworthy points around the summit in summer: from around 2900 m, you will see countless sea floor fossils on the ground, and when you reach the chapel, you will see that the thawing permafrost is causing the Italian chapel to slide and collapse. It was already badly cracked in 2018! The Italians have said they will restore it, which seems impossible on thawing permafrost. Finally, if you visit at the end of summer, you will see what you might mistake for snow residue around the summit, except that it is actually salt from the seabed! This is not a unique geological phenomenon: below the Col de La Bonnette (2,802 m), you can admire cliffs of seabed coral (source: FFRP "alpine flora" geological guide).

I also recommend the Italian refuge I RE MAGI with half board, at the bottom of the Vallée Etroite, in France but where everything is Italian! The evening meal, with its 100% Italian menu that is always the same, will leave you with unforgettable memories. If you want to be well liked by the managers, who are very kind, offer to help with the washing up at the end of the meal. The owner says that only the French do this, the Italians never!

The alpine flora of the mountain pasture is truly exceptional. According to the managers of the I RE MAGI refuge, the best time for flowering is from mid-June to mid-July.

Thanks to the author for the accuracy of the route and the quality of the description.

Walk on snow from Lake Peyron to the summit.

The Mont Thabor chapel is inaccessible. No shelter available.

A magnificent two-day hike with a stop at the mountain hut.
A bit crowded at the summit, but there's plenty of room!
No major difficulties, but there is a steep climb on the second day over the last two kilometres after a magnificent approach walk.
I think the "moderate" rating is a little underestimated compared to other Visorando ratings and could mislead some people.

A beautiful hike with a summit that is very popular at this time of year, as several other routes converge at the foot of Mount Thabor.
360° view
30m traverse on a snowfield without difficulty... on soft snow.
The trip to and from the refuge is secondary unless you want to refill your water bottles or have a snack there.

I didn't follow the suggested route exactly.
I climbed up through the narrow valley, then to the magnificent green lake, then to the Thabor refuge. It's good to have the 1:25,000 map.
Then I climbed Mont Thabor, which seems so far away. But in the end, the 3 hours and 15 minutes indicated are very achievable! It's very beautiful! And I returned directly from the Col de Méandres to the narrow valley.
