The starting point is in the village of Valfréjus. Easy parking on Rue des Bettes.
(S/E) Head down towards the Ruisseau du Charmaix, towards the children’s water play area.
(1) Cross the stream at the second bridge (just after the water play area).
Continue along the path on the left bank, towards Les Herbiers.
If in doubt between two paths, take the one that climbs the most (the others are mountain bike trails). You will come to a ruin.
(2) When the path joins a road, turn right to cross the hamlet of Les Herbiers.
There is a wayside shrine and two beautiful waterfalls on the right as you leave Les Herbiers. Continue due south.
(3) Look out for the small path marked on the left: this leads back to a very pleasant path through the woodland.
Immediately on the right is the entrance to an old mine, and you can see a mine cart inside.
Carry on until you reach a road, just before Le Lavoir, where you’ll find old blockhouses and other military buildings.
(4) Carry on straight ahead. Pass the pumping station and take the road on the left, which leads to the cheese dairy. The building, visible from Valfréjus, is also a former military building.
Once at the cheese dairy, go round the right-hand side of the building: a beautiful view of Valfréjus and the Vanoise.
(5) Head back down, passing by Le Lavoir again, without crossing the Charmaix stream. Return to the fork you passed earlier.
(4) Turn right onto the road.
(6) Quite soon, leave the road and take the signposted path on the left. Continue the descent, sometimes on a narrow track, sometimes on the tarmac road leading to a wash house (hidden behind a wall on the left)
Arrive in Valfréjus at the Lodge des Tavernes.
(7) Continue left along the track.
(8) Just after passing under the ski run, turn left and head down towards Valfréjus, taking the ski run to return to the starting point (S/E).
