Park in the Rue des Bettets car park.
(S/E) Take the wide, carriage-accessible path that descends towards the Ruisseau du Charmaix.
(1) Ignore the first bridge and continue to the left. Cross the stream at the second bridge just after the water play area. Follow the path towards Les Herbiers and you’ll come out onto a track, just below the hamlet. Turn right to reach it.
(2) Take the path on the right which climbs through the woodland, following the signs for “Arplane” and “Le Bon Pré”. You will reach a fork.
(3) Continue to the left; the other path leads back down towards Valfréjus. Shortly afterwards, ignore another poorly marked path branching off to the right and continue straight on, continuing to climb. Join the junction of the path leading from La Turra to Arplane.
(4) Turn right, but don’t hesitate to take a short detour of a few metres to the left to enjoy the view. Continue to Les Granges d’Arplane: further up, you can see Le Truc and the cross on its summit.
(5) Turn left to climb up to Le Truc. The path isn’t very visible in places, but cairns are there to guide you and the summit is clearly visible anyway.
(6) Enjoy the exceptional view! Head back down to Les Granges d’Arplane.
(5) Continue straight on towards Le Pré and its chalets.
(7) At the first chalet, turn right to cross the clearing, reach the second chalet and turn right again in front of it. The rest of the descent is straightforward. Make sure to stay on the track once you’ve joined it. Once at the bottom, cross the bridge over the Charmaix.
(1) Continue left to reach Valfréjus and the car park where you started (S/E).
– but what a view from the top. At stage 6, carry on to the large cairn; it’s just another 15 minutes’ walk to take in the full panorama from even higher up. Absolutely brilliant
