Le Masnau-Massuguiès walks

At the headwaters of the Dadou, the rugged terrain of the plateau vies with the forested gorges of the river and its tributaries; as the locals say, ‘Lo rec manjo la plano’ (the stream eats away at the plateau).

Starting from Saint-Michel de Léon, this ‘nature’ route alternates between forest and open sections, offering stunning views of the Dadou valley, following both its slopes. Apart from a few short sections, most of the route follows very gentle gradients, allowing walkers plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings.

Alternating between peaks and the Gijou valley, during this walk hikers will discover some magnificent villages and hidden hamlets in the Tarn department, explore a region with a rich historical past and observe a varied and protected flora and fauna.

A beautiful hike that will take you from the Gijou valley, with the villages of Lacaze and Viane, to the heights of the small plateau above Carayon, from where you can see as far as the Pyrenees on a clear day. A brief foray into the Second World War with the two monuments before Le Sucail is a pleasant way to round off this beautiful day.

Perched on a plateau at over 800m, Montfranc and the spire of its mountain-style church look out towards the Tarn and the Aveyron. A short, unpretentious walk, with lovely paths and views of the Monts de Lacaune.

A route leading from a valley spared from development to one of the department’s last remaining monuments dating from the year 1000. A beautiful walk starting from the Maison de la Vallée du Gijou, to discover one of the Tarn’s most unusual and mystical heritage sites: the Chapel of Saint-Jean Del Frech, first mentioned in 972.You’ll also enjoy stunning views in the heart of nature along the ridges overlooking this valley, which nearly disappeared forever due to a dam project.

This hike starts in the small village of Gijounet and leads first to the Roquenière viewpoint and orientation table, then to Puech de Montgros, where you can enjoy a 360° view of the landscape. There is no monotony on this very "natural" circuit, where forest passages alternate with ridge paths that allow you to enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding puechs and the Gijou valley.

In the Berlou region, the local woodland once provided charcoal for the villages, hamlets and farms of a land of livestock and crops. Today, on the Puech dels Carboniès, the shepherds’ huts bear witness to this history, set amongst conifer plantations…

A peaceful hike that first leads to the valley where the Gijou flows before climbing up to the plateau, where a rural landscape dotted with farms unfolds. Mostly in the undergrowth, the route nevertheless offers several open sections with views stretching over the hills and slopes, where meadows and cultivated land intermingle. A few sections on tarmac require caution but do not detract from the peaceful atmosphere that prevails throughout.

This hike will delight those who enjoy walking in the woods and listening to the murmur of streams. Starting from the village of Espérausses, it will take you through woods and small valleys to Puech Carbonniés, which boasts a beautiful coniferous forest and remarkable views. As an added bonus, you can discover "jasses" or dry stone shepherds' huts, reminders of a bygone pastoral era.

This hike takes you through valleys and plateaus, forests and viewpoints, passing through Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy, Notre-Dame-de-Tournadous and the Maison de la Vallée du Gijou. This hike alternates between ascents and descents, surrounded by nature, with beautiful views. Halfway along the route, you can discover the biodiversity trail at the Maison de la Vallée du Gijou.Don't leave the hamlet of Ganoubre without visiting the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Tournadous, with its cedar tree classified as a "remarkable tree".A long stretch of open countryside awaits you between Le Roucan and Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy.At the end of your hike, discover the14th-century polychrome statue of the Virgin and Child in the church of Saint-Pierre de Trivisy.

Starting from the small village of Pousthomy, this walk alternates between sections through woodland and along the ridge, where the view opens up to 360°. In terms of heritage, the Monastery of Notre-Dame d’Orient at the start of the route, three menhir statues along the way and a visit to Combret at its remarkable site will delight lovers of beautiful stonework and provide an excellent addition to this nature walk.

A refreshing hike that takes place mainly in the forest. From the Col de la Bassine, the route first leads to the Tourbière des Pansières and its discovery trail, then to Mont Roucous after a quick and easy climb. To finish in style, part of the "Sur les traces de l'Enfant Sauvage" trail allows you to enjoy interesting and entertaining information panels and exceptional undergrowth.

Starting from the small village of Cambous, this hike to discover the "Pays du Margnès" alternates between forest passages and open spaces offering beautiful views. After a stop at the Canroute bog and its discovery trail, the climb to Puech Cornet and its orientation table brings the route to a beautiful close with a magnificent 360° panorama.

On the edge of the Sidobre, the Montagnol Forest is home to magnificent stands of deciduous trees and a rich variety of flora and fauna. A magnificent route at the junction of the Monts de Lacaune and the Rougier de Camarès. This circular route winds around a remarkable village where Art Brut and the Arts Buissoniers intermingle. The paths and forest tracks are often wide and shaded. 85 per cent of the route is off-road and offers beautiful panoramic views of southern Aveyron! The GPX track may prove very useful.

Very interesting hike as much for the landscapes (Rance valley, Rougier de Camarès) as for the culture (village of Combret, Notre-Dame d'Orient, numerous crosses). Some portions on tarmac, but with the magnificence of the small paths and the beauty of the landscape, you'll quickly forget them.

This hike, mostly in tree-shade, takes you through coombs and valleys to the south of Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance. Beautiful paths, some of them forgotten or seldom used, add a pleasant touch of wilderness. A breath of fresh air in absolute calm, in an unspoilt natural setting, not forgetting the two menhir statues at Pousthomy, which add a touch of historical interest to this walk.

This route offers a wide variety of landscapes: fields, meadows, rivers and forests. Numerous crossings of valleys through which tributaries of the Dadou flow make this hike quite physically demanding. The villages on the hilltops, ridges or valley floors bear witness to farming and livestock rearing that is still active amidst unspoilt nature. This route combines the Chemin des Bergers in the north with the Sentier du Chevreuil in the south, already described on Visorando, returning via theGR® 36.

A circular route that will take you through small villages, charming hamlets, rivers, woods and peaceful landscapes. Majestic sites (such as the Oulas Gorges, Paulin Castle and the valley of the three rivers at Saint-Jean de Jeannes) can round off the day. This is the land of the sheep that provide the milk for Roquefort cheese.

The Lacaune Mountains, thanks to the diversity of their landscapes, offer a remarkable palette of colours and are a real treat for walkers.

This is the longest stage of the route, but it presents no particular difficulties.Most of the route runs through the Lacaune National Forest.The Rieufrech Stream will accompany you with its crystal-clear murmur almost all the way along the path.You might want to stop for lunch by the stream, next to a small bridge.

A pleasant walk, 80% of which is along shaded forest paths, offering a 360° view of Lacaune from the Roc des Écus. It can be completed at a leisurely pace in 2 hours 15 minutes with the family, as the climbs are gentle.

This is a family-friendly round-trip hike offering splendid views of Lacaune and its surroundings from the famous Roc des Écus. More than half of the route follows a wide forest track, then a beautiful, easy trail that is shaded almost all the way.

From the narrow streets of Lacaune, with its already mountainous atmosphere, the ascent to the summit of Montalet takes place in the hushed atmosphere of magnificent beech forests. The Pic de Montalet peaks at 1259 m. A day of hiking and fresh air to take in the beauty of the landscape. The 360° view of the Massif Central from the Rocher de la Vierge is breathtaking.

A hike through forests and open meadows with beautiful views of the Montagne Noire and the wind turbines of Puech du Singladou. Not to mention several areas that will delight wild strawberry lovers, enough to motivate any foodie hiker.

This hike, mostly along ridges, offers beautiful views of three valleys: the Ruisseau du Robert at the start, then the Gijou and finally the beautiful Vallée du Berlou at the end of the route. We are in the Haut-Languedoc Regional Park and the mountains rise up to the delight of the eyes. There are roads, of course, but most of them are quiet and offer a bucolic atmosphere, especially in early spring.

Hike in Vabre in the Tarn – Destination Sidobre & Vallées. Set between the river and the ridge path, this trail will charm you with its many vantage points and panoramic view of the village of Vabre. A hiking trail in the heart of nature, running alongside the River Gijou, largely shaded, and offering magnificent views along the ridge path.You can also enjoy a visit to the village of Vabre, with its13th-century belfry, its Maquis exhibition, its temple and its many restored wash houses (guided tours are available in July and August on Tuesday mornings; bookings can be made at the tourist office).

Walk in Vabre in the Tarn – Destination Sidobre & Vallées, also known as the Camin del Puèg de Borion. A lovely path winding through the countryside and lined with hamlets, where you’ll be treated to several beautiful panoramic views. After the hamlet of Brugairoles, you’ll pass some ruins where you can admire two beautiful granite arches.At the end of the walk, take some time to stroll through the charming village of Vabre and explore its belfry – the Trauc de la Campana – its church, its various restored wash houses and the local specialities on offer in the shops.

Hike in Vabre in the Tarn. Destination: Sidobre & Valleys. Caminols de Berlon. The route starts in Vabre, a village with a rich heritage. The path continues along the Gijou valley and then the Berlou valley, passing through its pretty hamlets. After La Reloc, the route leaves the valley to climb through the forest towards the ridges. From the ridges, as you descend towards Vabre, you can enjoy the views over the Berlou valley, the Montagnol forest, then the Gijou valley and Vabre. In Vabre, you’ll discover a rich heritage: the ‘Trauc de la Campana’ (a13th-century belfry), the church (one of the largest in France), listed17th-century houses, the Pont Neuf (1850), an exhibition on the Maquis (mornings in July and August) and wash houses.

The hike starts with a steady climb to reach the ridge of the Hautes Terres d'Oc. The descent is gentle, through a beautiful beech forest, along holly hedges and a small stream at the end. There is shade all along the way except for 2-3 km at the summit.

This short family hike, shaded and sheltered from the wind, is as pleasant in summer as it is in winter. You will enjoy the scenery and the sunken paths between hazelnut trees and holly.

Hiking trail in the municipality of Fontrieu-en-Sidobre & Vallées in the Tarn - Occitanie A beautiful route, showcasing a landscape shaped by the combination of farming and forestry, offering walkers a stunning mosaic of scenery. A green valley runs through the vast commune of Fontrieu, amongst beautiful farmland dotted with hedgerows and dry stone walls. It was here that the Ouillats convent was established in 1825, benefiting from fertile land and abundant water. Above Biot and towards the south, the mountain rises 300 metres and marks the start of a vast wooded area on the granite ridge of Puech Margot. In this landscape, amidst recent clearings and old high forests, the cry of the harrier and the hammering of the woodpecker often echo the rustling of the wind through the branches.

Places to visit: the Museum of Protestantism and Ferrières Castle. Start opposite the town hall annexe, at La Ramade. A walk through woodland, fields and meadows, with numerous viewpoints. Magnificent panoramic views of the Monts de Lacaune, the Sidobre, the Montagne Noire and the Pyrenees. The route passes through the village of Ferrières, where you can see the château and the watermills, and follow the route of the little train that operated until 1962, which had opened up this entire hilly region.

Hiking trail in Fontrieu in Sidobre & Vallées in the Tarn – Occitanie. Start with a game of the goose, followed by a lovely climb amongst the rocks, culminating in a magnificent viewpoint. After a game of the Game of the Goose, you’ll set off to explore the Roc de Peyremourou, a former ‘shaking rock’ that toppled over in the early20th century. It was nevertheless listed in 1921 as it remains unique in the Sidobre region.On the way, stop off at the old shepherds’ hut.Not to be missed: the Museum of Protestantism, ‘From the Reformation to Secularism’

A fully signposted trail offering magnificent views over the forests, followed by pleasant farmland. Passes through charming hamlets. A few rocks characteristic of the Sidobre region. The route is mostly shaded, which is welcome in summer.

A beautiful forest walk around Ferrières. Chestnut trees, beech, oak, spruce, holly, boxwood, elm… all these tree species are there for us to enjoy. This walk is recommended for around mid-November, when the beech trees have taken on their autumn colours.

This combination of the ‘circular route of Plos’ (in Occitan, ‘Plo’ means village) and the ‘Peyremourou’ nature trail offers a great variety of landscapes: the old Castres–Brassac railway line overlooking the Agout, the granite rocks as you climb towards Peyremourou, the villages of Pébiau and Casalits nestled in their mountainous setting, the alpine meadows of the plateau overlooking them, and, to round it off, the imposing Château de Ferrières.

A short, scenic walk through the lush countryside of the Gousilles and Gos valleys and the surrounding hills.

Hiking trail in the commune of Brassac-sur-Agout in Sidobre & Vallées in the Tarn – Occitanie. Passing through Brassac, a medieval town, and its old quarters, this relatively easy route follows the banks of the Agout, quickly taking you into the heart of the countryside.

The Roc de l’Oie, the Elephant, the Three Cheeses or the Devil’s Armchair, for example. These are just a few of the rock formations, each as astonishing as the next, which you’ll discover amidst the woodland of Crémaussel. You’ll walk, explore, climb and let your imagination run wild… following the signposts in search of secret passages and other remarkable rock formations in this labyrinth of ‘invisibles’.

This region, between Mazamet and Castres, is extraordinary for its accumulation of granite boulders, left in all directions by nature. The walk is always sheltered from the sun and wind, and there is no tarmac. I am making an exception to my rule of ignoring the markings left on rocks and trees. This walk is well signposted, but only pay attention to the FFR markings. White and red lines for theGR® and yellow lines elsewhere.

This circuit combines the pleasures of walking with those of a picnic by the water. The Sidobre rocks are a curiosity worth discovering. Lac du Merle is a haven of peace and enchantment where you can relax in the summer heat. It is a beautiful spot with rocks rising out of the water, giving you the feeling of walking on air.
