The mountain trail starting from Montfranc

Perched on a plateau at over 800m, Montfranc and the spire of its mountain-style church look out towards the Tarn and the Aveyron. A short, unpretentious walk, with lovely paths and views of the Monts de Lacaune.

Description of the walk

Car park and start point: Place de l'Église in Montfranc.

Route marked in yellow only on thefirst section

(S/E) Facing the church, turn right and walk around the houses. When the street bends to the right, leave it and head straight down a grassy sunken path (not shown on the map). Join a small road and follow it to the left for about fifty metres.

(1) At the junction, turn left. Follow the road to the hamlet of Le Clot.

(2) After the buildings, continue straight ahead along a forest track.

(3) At the next junction, head up a path to the right. Cross a coniferous woodland, stay on the main winding path and ignore all the side trails.

(4) On the ridge, at the fork with a cross, continue straight ahead (west). Join the D607 and follow it to the right for about a hundred metres (with caution).

(5) Leave the road and follow a grassy path on the left. Head south then south-west. Pass through the farm at La Bouriette.

(6) Follow the road to the right as far as Pourencas.

(7) At the corner by Pourencas church, turn right. Pass by the cemetery and follow an old track leading to the D82.

(8) Follow this road to the right and immediately ignore a smaller road on the right. You’ll come out onto the 607; follow it to the left towards the village.

(9) Take thefirst street on the right. At the end, turn left. Ignore a street on the right and, at the next junction, you will find yourself back at the church square (S/E)..

The route is nicer the other way round! In short, do it the other way round. A lovely walk, and much quicker than it sounds.

There are a few sections where it seems as though no one has been there for ages, as the vegetation has completely taken over, making it difficult to find a way through! Beautiful views and a refreshing atmosphere... Fairly easy, with no real difficulties... and nothing else of particular interest

Thanks, Cécile, the route was spot on. We went for a walk on Sunday along a snow-covered path. It was brilliant!!!

Alternative route: Starting with your back to the church, leave the square and head towards the town hall. Follow the street to the junction leading towards LE CLOT.
You’ll pass a goat farm and a billy goat (very smelly!).
Avoid the small grassy sunken path (ticks, stinging nettles, brambles).
Beautiful scenery in the LACAUNE hills.
In POURENCAS, a wood turner.
