Description of the walk

(S/E) From La Case Nature equestrian farm, head west along the old Sénégats path that runs behind the horse stalls and, keeping to your right, descend into the woods to join a wide track that drops sharply for a few dozen metres and runs alongside a recent plantation of conifers on your right and a narrow plot of tall conifers on your left.

(1) The track turns left and continues along and above the Rd81 towards Lacaze, then meets another track (about 800 m further on) which leads back to the Rd81, turning right.

(2) Cross the Rd81 and take the shortcut opposite, which leads back to the small road to Ladières and La Borie (about 600 m).

(3) At the corner of the first buildings in La Borie, turn right, pass by the houses (on your left) and take the yellow marked path (PR®) between the hedges and through the undergrowth to Jasse de Clamouze, where you cross the Gréziès stream.

(4) Turn left after the stream and continue to follow the yellow markings until you reach the tarmac road (just below La Thomasié). You will then arrive at a small road which you take on the left towards Ganoubre and Notre-Dame-de-Tournadous.

(5) When you reach the Rd157 (Ganoubre), turn right: you can head towards the distinctive white bell tower of Notre-Dame-de-Tournadous and its houses, then descend onto the main road a little further on, or stay on the D157 for about 250 metres until you find the botanical trail just after Notre-Dame-de-Tournadous, on your left.

(6) Follow the botanical trail on the left (around thirty information boards teach you about the different species of trees that populate the valley), which leads you to the very pretty and picturesque Sénégats bridge (admire the beautiful Occitan cross on the bridge, dating from 1760).
Stay on the right bank of the Gijou (do not cross the bridge) and climb the path that leads to the hilltop hamlet of Sénégats (private castle), along the cliffs overlooking the Gijou.
Cross the hamlet until you find a path marked in yellow on your left, between the houses.

(7) Descend towards the Gijou, passing under an old fortified gate in the hamlet, restored by the inhabitants, and following a magnificent path under the box trees.

(8) Cross the Gijou (classified Natura 2000) via the footbridge, then follow the path to the Rd171 (road from Vabre to Lacaze).

(9) Follow the Rd171 on your left (towards Lacaze) for 240 m.

(10) Take the path that climbs up to your right, winding through the woods, which will take you to the Las Communes farm buildings (574 m). Go around them on the right.

(11) Turn right and follow the small Las Communes road for about 250 m: you will find the yellow-marked path on your left, which takes you on a very pretty route through the woods to the Sénégats Bridge (430 m).
After a stop at the Maison de la Vallée (information on the valley's ecosystems, fauna, flora, exhibitions, rehabilitation projects, etc.), take the yellow-marked path that passes between the houses towards Bourdelles, Ganoubre and Ramiès.

(12) When you reach the Bourdelles road (590 m), continue downhill towards Ganoubre for about 270 m.

(13) At a left-hand bend, take the path (PR® Yellow) on your right. Follow the D171 towards Lacaze, going up the Gijou on its left bank.

(14) Pass the ruins of Ramiès and rejoin the tarmac road at the ruins of Lestang. Cross the hamlet of Cairols, pass close to the fish farming ponds of La Mouline de Sahuzet (note the two menhirs at the edge of a property on your left after crossing the Gijou) and you will return to the Rd171.

(15) Follow it to the right towards Lacaze for barely 100 metres; cross the road and take the yellow-marked trail (PR®) which will take you to the D81, 540 metres higher up, near the tall houses of Lourtiguié.

(16) At a bend in the road, cross carefully and continue along the yellow marked trail, climbing over the rocks and then through the undergrowth. You will arrive at the hamlet of Labessède (you will have passed a path leading down to the right towards the village of Lacaze).

(17) At the hamlet of Labessède, turn left and follow the small tarmac road back to the lodge and La Case Nature equestrian farm (S/E).

Notes

An easy hike but with some elevation changes.
The paths are sometimes rocky, so high-top walking shoes are preferable and walking sticks are always recommended.
The route is mostly shaded but offers some beautiful views.
Picnic tables are available at the Maison de la Vallée, near the Gijou.
In the morning, you can buy trout at the Mouline de Sahuzet fish farm.
If you stop at La Case Nature, for a delicious local meal at its Table d'Hôtes, for example, you will hear many stories about the history of the region, including:
- the legend of Notre-Dame de Tournadous and Sénégats.
- the history of Lacaze Castle and the Assemblées du Désert, the Laroque and Cado maquis, the little train from Castres to Murat...
- the history of some colourful local characters ("an eel around the kidneys", "a colourful poacher", etc.).

Worth a visit

Points of interest along the route:
- The botanical trail in the Gijou Valley.
- The bell tower of Notre-Dame de Tournadous* (from the Second Empire) in Ganoubre. - The Sénégats bridge* and its Occitan cross from 1760.

Some difficulty following the trail and finding one or two junctions, especially the one before the bread oven and the beautifully restored gate. Look between the houses when you arrive on the flat ground in the small hamlet. For the rest, if you stray from the trail, follow the brown dotted lines and you will definitely rejoin the trail. We missed the menhirs at the end, which was a shame. Allow 1½ hours less for normal walkers without children, not counting the lunch break. Don't hesitate, it's a great hike, mostly in the shade.

A very pretty area to explore, with beautiful scenery and a medieval hamlet and castle. Don't miss the beautiful medieval castle of Senegats (private and inhabited), a former local seigneury dating back to the Viscounts of Lautrec (1250). Also see the Occitan cross from 1760 on the Senegats bridge, a few hundred metres from the hamlet.
Please note that at point 10, there are no markings, so follow the description and then the path through the woods. Sometimes the GPX track is useful for finding your way. In the hamlet of Senegats, the markings on the left (point 7) are hidden by a pile of wood. Don't hesitate to ask the locals if you can't find them.
OPTION 1: we only did part of the route (about 12 km), starting at point 3 and connecting point 13 to point 3, taking a short stretch of road.
OPTION 2: do the eastern part of the route, starting at point 13 and going to point 3, then finally connecting point 3 to 13 by road.

Beautiful hike. No markings at the start. Before descending to the Grezies stream, an unmaintained trail, you have to take a right turn onto a side trail. This hike is probably best done in summer because there is a lot of undergrowth and magnificent forests along the way. We did it at the end of November when it was -4 degrees. Lovely views and historical sites along the way. The hike is longer than indicated. Allow between 19 and 20 km.

Superb hike through woods and meadows. There is indeed a section along the banks of the Gijou where you really need to use your intuition. Yes, a large part of the path has disappeared. With the Visorando app, we managed to find our way, but without it, we would have had problems! In some places, the grass is very tall. Yes, it's a hike that is wild in places and so beautiful. Thank you, Visorando.

This is a 19 km country walk. Between points 9 and 11, the path is not marked and difficult to find. Beautiful rolling countryside with picturesque villages. We started the walk at point 16 because the road to point 1 is in very poor condition.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

- The route sometimes deviates from the physical path, particularly between points 3 and 4.

On the one hand, the path is not shown on the IGN map and, on the other hand, the route does indeed deviate from the path shown on the OSM map.

Following your comment, information has been sent by private message to the author of the hike.

See you soon.

A very interesting hike in a natural, wild landscape.
Three points to note:
- There are few dedicated parking spaces at the starting point at Case Nature.
- The route sometimes deviates from the physical path, particularly between points 3 and 4.
- The footbridge at point 8 is in poor condition: missing or rotten planks.

An interesting route to take in dry, shady weather.
I can confirm that after a long period of rain, the route between points 6 and 8 is particularly wet.
As a result, the climb to the hamlet of Sénégats and the descent to Gijou require particular attention.
The path in this area is stony, and the combination of runoff water, moss and decaying leaves makes it very slippery.
The signs on the botanical trail could also do with a little "facelift".
I will return when the weather is warmer.

A beautiful, rather long hike through the woods.
Be careful of the numerous and fairly steep slopes!
Interesting viewpoints in good weather (notably from Sénégats-le-haut) and La Borie: beautiful view of Ganoubre and the valley.
In rainy weather and in autumn/spring, wear high-top shoes: although the valley is fairly dry in summer, it is full of springs and small streams in wet seasons, so the paths are very soggy.
Thank you for this beautiful route!

PS: at La Borie, watch out for the dog (border collie type) if it is not on a leash...

Very shaded route with no particular difficulties

Only downside: the starting point is not marked, so it is a little difficult to find.

Hello,

A lovely walk to do in warm weather, with much of the route through woodland.
It's a shame that the Senagats picnic table is in full sun and wind.
Best regards
