(S/E) Departure from the Forand car park.
(1) Instead of heading towards the bottom of the valley (north), climb up to the left (west) towards a few houses. The trail then climbs steeply through the forest. Higher up, it joins a flat path. Continue along the uphill trail until you reach the track that leads to the Mont Rosset mountain pasture.
(2) Follow the trail that crosses the track in places and reach the mountain hut.
(3) From there, take the path on the left that climbs back up towards the Col du Mont Rosset.
(4) Further on, leave this path to the left (west) and climb up to Lac de la Portette (no signposts, check the route on the map carefully).
(5) From the lake, there is a beautiful view of the Vanoise peaks. To reach the Col du Mont Rosset from the lake, there are two options (see the alternative in the Practical Information section).
This route should be avoided in bad weather, especially fog.
Head east off the trail (this is the route marked on the map), passing two small lakes, and rejoin the trail to the pass.
(6) Take the pass trail on the left (north). You will quickly reach the Col du Mont Rousset.
(7) The descent from the pass (to the north-east) is sometimes a little steep, but you will quickly reach the Refuge de la Balme.
(8) From the refuge, descend via theGR® trail that heads east.
(9) From elevation 1928, the trail descends the valley to the south. Be careful at elevation 1701.
(10): Leave theGR®, cross the stream via the small bridge and continue south to reach the car park (S/E).
. I think it would have been easier in the other direction since the snow on that side only started halfway between 3 and 4 (so less climbing in the snow and descending in the snow is easier).
