(S/E) From the Saint-Guérin Chapel car park, take the path on the left - Signposts: Chalet du Mont Rosset - Col du Mont Rosset.
The path begins to climb, passing by elegant chalets, then turns into a trail as it enters the forest.
The trail crosses a track twice. After reaching the second track, the trail climbs further into the forest, this time following the yellow and red markings ofthe GRP® du tour du Beaufortin.
(1) When you come out onto a track again, a signpost offers the alternative of climbing to the Chalet du Mont Rosset in 45 minutes via the path or in 50 minutes via the track.
- If you choose the shorter option (the one shown on the map), the route follows a series of paths and tracks.
- Staying on the marked trail, pass a wooden cross that is clearly visible in the mountain pasture (altitude 2,003 m). Then continue north towards the Chalet du Mont Rosset, which is also clearly visible (altitude 2,117 m).
(2) Above the chalet, begin the ascent via the marked path on the left, which is the same as the one leading to Lac de Portette.
(3) After 800 m, leave the path to the lake on your left and continue north on theGRP® towards the Col du Mont Rosset (altitude 2332 m).
(4) From the pass, descend into the Torrent de Cerdosse valley, dominated by the distinctive Pierra Menta. Thanks to the relief, the communal refuge of La Balme is already visible at the bottom of the valley.
Lined with rhododendrons, the path crosses the torrent twice, once at a ford and once on a stone slab. Reach the Refuge de la Balme (altitude 2009 m).
(5) The rest of the route is now clearly visible: it is a wide pastoral track running parallel to the Ornente torrent, which is also part ofthe GR®5.
Begin a gentle descent; sometimes paths cut across the large bends in the track.
(6) At the bottom of the valley, at a place called Laval, leave theGR®5to cross the torrent on a wooden footbridge and continue the descent on the other bank.
You will return to the starting point in 20 minutes (S/E).
