Izieu can be reached from Brégnier-Cordon or Murs-Gélignieux on the right bank of the Rhône. Take the CD19d, cross the village and continue straight ahead, Rue du Palais then Route du Grand Thur, to park at the first hairpin bend on the right, near a water tank.
(S/E) Go up RouteGR®59du Grand Thur on the right for 200 metres until the first left-hand bend.
(1) Leave theGR®. Take the path that starts level on the left in the hollow of the curve. It crosses a few paths and a track, then gradually climbs through the forest on the mountainside, heading north.
(2) When it passes below the summit, the slope becomes steeper and the path veers north-east to climb a steep gully between rocky areas until it reaches the edge of the summit plateau.
(3) On this plateau, where the geodesic summit is not very pronounced and is wooded, follow the paths that approach the rocky edge to enjoy the views, then walk a hundred metres to the north-west for another viewpoint to the east. Return to the forest path leading southwards.
The fairly obvious path curves a few times as it descends a moderate slope to join the Grande Montagne forest road at a place called En Bochet.
(4) Take this road on the right, rejoining theGR®59: it first descends in hairpin bends on a ridge, then swings around to the west side and, after two hairpin bends, rejoins the starting point (S/E).
A fairly easy route to find, offering magnificent panoramic views.
