Park in Champfromier at the village hall car park.
(S/E) Descend into the Volferine Gorges, site of the Pierre Percée. The telemechanical pillar at the Pont de la Chèvre served as a relay for the cable that turned the wheel of a mill from a turbine.
After crossing the small Chèvre bridge and continuing to the right, you can take a short detour to the left to admire the "pierced rock".
(1) At the exit of the gorges, on the flat pasture, take the Chemin de Sous Roche on the right and enter the woods.
(2) Follow the Sentier des Prés Carrés path (not shown on the map) to the left. This path leads to the large bend at Domplomb. Turn left and walk for about 50 metres, then cross the road and take the tunnel on the right. At the end of the tunnel, cross the road carefully and join the start of the Sentier du Dragon path.
(3) Descend the path on the right. The path then bends to the left and heads east. Before the Pont du Dragon bridge, you will see the remains of the customs officers' gatehouse. From the bridge, you can admire the fish ladder that trout use to cross the dam. Continue to the Ferme du Dragon in Sous Roche, a former grocery store located on the edge of the free zone.
(4) Turn right and continue along a good path to the Sous Roche hydroelectric plant, which powered the tram.
(5) Cross the Valserine on a footbridge, then tackle a steep climb heading north-west.
At the climbing cliffs, stairs and a small bridge over a resurgence allow you to reach the woods and then the pasture.
(2) Continue straight ahead.
(1) Turn left onto the Chemin des Gorges de la Volferine to return to the car park (S/E).
We hadn't read the comments! But with a low elevation gain of 200 metres, we wouldn't have thought so! I can't even imagine people doing it the other way downhill, wow, slippery ++
