The Crêt de la Dolca on snowshoes

The Crêt de la Dolca via La Revêche and Les Trois Bornes. This description leads to the Crêt de la Dolca; this peak is not marked as such on the IGN map—there is only an altitude of 1434—but on the ground it is signposted with this name.
This is a route that often strays from the marked paths, so you really need to use the map to find your way.

Description of the walk

Head to the hamlet of Montagny in the commune of Arith and park in the car park at the end of the tarmac road.

(S/E) Set off along the wide path, ignoring the tracks branching off on either side. Pass a hairpin bend at a place called La Benoite.

(1) At the exit, take the path leading off to the right. You will come to a crossroads marked by a wooden cross.

(2) Take the path on the left for about 750 m until you reach a fork.

(3) Leave theGR® de Pays du Massif des Bauges here.
This time, take the path on the right, the one marked with a Yellow Cross and a Red Cross. This path crosses the Mariet Dessus mountain pasture between two fences, reaches the edge of the woods, and passes behind a large chalet.

(4) Take the path that climbs diagonally northwards. On leaving the woods, continue due north through a clearing, and look out for a small chalet called Le Point Du Jour, see photo.

(5) Turn your back on this chalet and head west, facing the ridge for about 80 m, then turn north again; an open barn will soon come into view, along with a curtain of conifers that you will need to cross.
As you emerge into the large meadow, look out for a barn, head towards it and pass it by. When you reach a fence, turn left.

(6) Climb the slope to the left, heading west. This short but somewhat steep climb through deep snow, where no tracks have yet been made, leads to a marked path.

(7) Turn left, heading south, onto this ascending path to reach Les Trois Bornes (1,360 m) at a fork.

(8) Pass the boundary markers and continue straight ahead towards the Crêt de la Dolca.
As you leave the forest, turn left onto a short, steep slope towards the 1434m altitude.

(9) Then cross over to the other side and head south-east to go round a small copse; when the slope levels off, head north-east towards the Vallon du Loret, crossing a fence.

(10) Gradually make your way to the edge of the forest and look for a gap in a flat area.

(11) Cross another fence and find a path that leads south-east back onto theGR® de Pays du Massif des Bauges.

(12) Follow it to the left as it descends and meet Mariet there.

(3) Turn right, heading in the opposite direction to the way out, to return to the car park (S/E).

The hike is very pleasant despite the lack of snow, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. However, the trail is very quiet and nature has taken over. In addition, the mountain pastures have been fenced off and we had to climb over barbed wire three times.

A lovely walk through hamlets, farms, paths, meadows and woods. Finding my own way was great fun; it’s so unusual to walk on unmarked trails. It’s not a physically demanding hike; it’s quite a long, idyllic walk. Thank you to the creator for this lovely route.

A lovely walk with no trouble finding your way up to point 6; after that, it was a right mess trying to find the path – no tracks, as there was snow. After climbing the slope past the Chalet de la Revéche, we found ourselves facing a barbed-wire fence; it was impossible to get through, neither straight ahead nor to the left or right. Where is the way through? We searched but couldn’t find it, so we turned back (I’ll be back next summer).

"This short but somewhat steep climb through deep snow, where no track has yet been made, leads onto a marked path which we’ll follow northwards.
Our aim now is to reach the ridge looming above us to the left; the path descends gently and, as it begins a 180° turn"

Hello,
I don’t see the point of this detour (apart from following the entire ridge)...
Since, once you reach the marked path, you simply need to follow it southwards to reach Les Trois Bornes...

PS I’m a regular in the area...

We were missing an altimeter to help us work out exactly where to go, and perhaps a few photos to help us find our way, as well as some signs at key points.

We did this route in fresh snow and partly in fog, so there was no way to follow any tracks. Fortunately, some of the group knew the route very well. The walk was pleasant but there were no views; the horizon was obscured. I’ll do this ridge again in good weather!
It would be nice if a sign at the spot known as ‘Crêt de la Dolca’ could tell us that we’ve actually arrived!
