Head to Mont Devant at an altitude of 1,020 metres.
Park in the hamlet, where there are fortunately plenty of parking spaces. (You can also park near the stopover lodge and start from there).
(S) From the 1020m sign, take the road that leads to the Reposoir car park. Follow the snow-covered road to the Reposoir (1185m sign).
(1) Head towards the Col de Bornette, 35 minutes. N.B. In winter 2014, the path was not in very good condition (fallen tree, landslide), so it was better to go via the mountain pasture on the right. The junction between this alternative route and the usual path is downstream from the "Le Noubloz" barns.
(2) At the Col de Bornette, head north-west towards the Mollard chalets. When you reach the plateau, the route passes near a stele (view of Lake Annecy). From the chalets, the path is obvious but it is marked, and a few wide bends in the forest take you down the steep slope. Another flat section offers a chance to take a break and enjoy the view: La Montagne du Charbon and Le Grand Colombier. Descend into the valley.
(3) Enter the forest and begin the descent to the Préchéret chalet. Caution is required in the forest to negotiate the steeper sections.
(4) At Préchéret, descend via theGR®96towards Mont Derrière. During the descent, leave theGR®96.
(5) Head towards a barn, then a second smaller one, for a final descent into the meadows, where vehicles glisten in the sun below (E).
A beautiful hike on Sunday with glorious sunshine at the top. The climb through the forest was difficult, not because of the steep slope but because of the cross-country skiers hurtling downhill, so we had to be very careful. Once we reached the summit, the descent into the valley was far too dangerous on snowshoes, because if you slip, the injury could have serious consequences, and it would be difficult for the emergency services to come and get us in this part of the descent. It's more reasonable to do this hike in winter without snowshoes. I did it this summer without any problems.
