The Col de Montfosset via Les Balmettes

A beautiful hike in a wild area of Belledonne.
With a bit of luck, you may encounter streams, lakes and trout, blueberries, marmots and chamois.

Description of the walk

When you arrive at Saint-Colomban des Villards from the Maurienne Valley, take the forest road just before the church and continue to Prés du Rivage, altitude 1741m (signposted).

(S/E) Start immediately by crossing the Torrent des Croix, then climb up the right bank of the torrent through the wide valley that leads to the lake.
At the start, the trail is marked with blue signs. At the intersection with theGR® de Pays Arvan Villards, the markings become yellow and red.

(1) At this intersection, do not take the direction of "Les Balais"; continue west to reach Lac des Balmettes (1 hour from the start).

(2) To reach the Col des Balmettes, allow another hour, following the trail still marked in yellow and red. The slope becomes steeper in an increasingly rocky landscape.

(3) At Col des Balmettes, you will see a wooden marker to the north. This is Col de Monfossé, also known as Col du Villonet.
To reach it, take the path to the north on the side of the slope. This section is almost horizontal as the pass is at an altitude of 2,457 metres. You will find yourself in a very rocky and wild area, where it is not uncommon to see chamois.
The pass is dominated to the west by the Pointe de l'Aup du Pont.

(4) Take the opposite path to return to the car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,743 m - Les Prés du Rivage
  2. 1 : km 0.65 - alt. 1,906 m - Leave the Balais trail on your right.
  3. 2 : km 1.81 - alt. 2,199 m - Lac des Balmettes
  4. 3 : km 2.75 - alt. 2,437 m - Col des Balmettes
  5. 4 : km 3.3 - alt. 2,457 m - Col du Villonet
  6. S/E : km 6.54 - alt. 1,742 m - Les Prés du Rivage

Notes

The forest road leading to Prés du Rivage is in good condition but very narrow.
Up to the lake, there may be sheep in the mountain pastures, but by the end of September they will have come down from the mountains, along with their sheepdogs.
There are many trail marks leading to the pass, but stay on the official trail.
Be careful on the path connecting the two passes; it is best to have sure footing as the path is on a slope and any slip could have unfortunate consequences, so avoid it in wet weather.

A beautiful walk through the mountain pastures to the Col des Balmettes. A must-stop to admire the lake nestled beneath the mountains. Then a very rocky stretch to the Col de Montfosset, but just as pretty and with breathtaking views. A few chamois at the top – in short, this walk ticks all the boxes.
The only downside is the access road, which is very bumpy for the first 2 km, then improves but remains very narrow throughout. I was lucky, I didn't meet anyone.
But in summary, this hike is well worth the detour.

Do not hesitate to continue on to the Montfosset pass; however, if you want to make a circular descent via Comberousse: the trail is very poorly marked, so pay attention to the markings and cairns; be careful not to descend too far.

Departure at 8:45 a.m. (from St-Colombans-des-Villards church), return at 4:45 p.m. Very nice weather. Stop at the Col des Balmettes pass at around 2,300 metres, covering approximately 17 km with a 1,200-metre elevation gain . We chose this route because of the condition of the road, which had been ravaged by a torrent at the start. In fact, after the second hairpin bend, there are no more problems
. The climb on foot along the road is tedious, so we do not recommend it, except for forest lovers, as it is a shaded climb with lots of pleasant smells.
Starting from Près du Rivage (the official starting point), this early autumn walk is really worthwhile. At the start, there is a beautiful view of the Aiguilles d'Arves, La Meije and the back of the Grandes Rousses. The route passes through blueberry bushes that are turning from green to red. However, we stopped below the Col des Balmettes. We will definitely be back to finish this hike.

A superb hike despite mixed weather. The blueberries are just ripe. The climb is a little steep towards the pass and you need to be careful on the Balmettes to Montfosset section, but there is no great danger.
On the way back, after the lake, we were able to admire a herd of small ibexes up close. It must be said that we were alone and took care not to scare them. Then we descended to the car park via the well-maintained balcony path. A nice alternative that avoids having to return by the same route.
A walk that comes highly recommended.

Solo hike.
Great wild route , the paths are steep
A short break, refreshments and on to the pass, the scenery is nice.
After the Col des Balmettes, on my way to the other pass, I come across a family of ibex (four or five young ones) They are on the path I need to take, with only 200 metres to go to reach the pass, so I decide to leave them in peace, take some photos, film them and turn back.
The passage between the two passes is tricky with its slope and rocks.
On the way back to the lake, I decide to pass under the Pic de Fremezan.
It's a bit longer, but we're in the shade of the peak. The descent has some tricky sections because we're on rocks, and we have to move from rock to rock. The last kilometre is on a forest road.
In the end, with the return via the other path, it's about 8 kilometres.
Thank you for this hike. My only regret is not seeing any marmots (I think I heard them whistling).

We really enjoyed this Col du Montfosset route.
At the very beginning of the route, the torrent is still quite lively at this time of year, and my companion immediately got his feet wet during the crossing.
It was very hot and we were very exposed on the slope. After an hour and a quarter of climbing, we arrived at Lake Balmette, which was still partially covered with ice. We saw chamois and marmots, which are clearly not very used to passers-by and do not run away immediately.
Other animals present in abundance: flies and ants.

The climb to the pass was quite difficult because of the numerous snowfields on the path,
but we still made it through the scree on the south face.
The cirque behind the pass was completely snow-covered, so there was no way to see the descent options available,
but there is definitely a path that descends on the other side of the pass.

After descending to Lac des Balmettes, we spotted another path that climbs up into the cirque below "Les Rochers de Vallorin". So perhaps by going around "les Rochers des trois doigts" (the Three Finger Rocks), it's possible to make a circular route and descend into the cirque below "les Rochers de Vallorin" after climbing up to the Col de Montfosset to reach Lac des Balmettes.
