Tête de Bellard and Grand Truc Circular Loop

This circular walk offers stunning views of the Toussuire hillside as well as the Belledonne massif. You’ll be treated to 360° views. The pastures you will cross will no doubt give you the chance to see sheep and their patous, large dogs trained to protect livestock. This walk should be undertaken in clear weather to fully enjoy the scenery.

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the La Toussuire Tourist Office, walk up through the village to the top of the high street, via Rue Verte, then Rue Blanche (D78).
Caution: traffic.

(1) Take the path leading uphill to the left (Rue du Marolay) to pass in front of the Youth Hostel and to the right of the snowmaking plant. Follow the farm track uphill, following the yellow signs for “la Tête de Bellard”. Ignore the paths on the right leading towards the water reservoirs.

(2) Continue to the left, ignoring the path on the right that leads directly to the Col du Marolay. Carry on to the Tête de Bellard and its viewpoint. Up there, there is a restaurant (closed during our hike) and the top station of the Tête de Bellard chairlift.

(3) Walk past the chairlift terminus and follow the ridge north-east towards the Col du Marolay and the Grand Truc. Follow the yellow signs. The ridge path is not always very well signposted or visible, particularly from the start at the Tête de Bellard.

(4) Once at the Col du Marolay, continue straight on towards the Grand Truc, staying on the ridge path. At the 2106m point, turn right towards the mast.

(5) At the Grand Truc, continue along the ridge for about 500m until you reach a fork (2142m). Turn right and head down towards La Toussuire. You will need to cross a field where sheepdogs are guarding the sheep (see practical information ¹). In our case, there were four of them. Above all, do not startle them; stay calm and pass slowly. They need to understand that you are not a predator. We weren’t entirely reassured, but we managed to cross anyway. Descend to La Toussuire via Le Plan du Lachat and La Lauzaz.

(6) Once you reach the village road (Rue des Chasseurs Alpins), turn left for about 200m then turn right to take the Chemin de la Boucle du fil de l'eau (marked on a yellow sign). Follow this path alongside the stream, cross the footbridge and continue to the Tourist Office (S/E).

Superb hike, route easy to follow except for a small section after Tête de Bellard which is rather rocky
The hike took four hours for fairly fit people, but we took the time to enjoy the scenery
It is very easy to park at La Toussuira next to the start

Take the Médaille d'Or chairlift up to La Grande Verdette.
Stunning panoramic mountain views
The path is sometimes poorly marked or blocked by shepherds’ electric fences. There are almost no signposts or signs.
All in all, a lovely walk despite everything.

A hike well worth doing for the 360° views!
There is no shade or water source along the route, so make sure you bring everything you need.
I came across two Patou dogs on this route. They were behind a flimsy fence. I was able to pass without any trouble. However, I would advise you to find out what behaviour is appropriate in their presence. Try to take detours wherever possible.

Hike completed in 3 hours 20 minutes.

A disappointing route, not because of the scenery but because of the trails. Many of the paths have had to be converted into trails due to the installation of chairlifts throughout the area, which has also resulted in visual pollution spoiling these beautiful landscapes.
I do, however, recognise that these slopes are suitable for families with young children or e-bike riders.

Difficult hike

  • A slippery ridge, narrowed by the boundaries of the pastures,
  • At the 2142m fork, the flock of sheep was grazing right at the entrance to the pastures and the five sheepdogs were not keen to let us in.
  • We had to follow the ridge for a further 500m to cross the fields without any landmarks, but with a good sense of direction to find our way back to Plan du Lachat.

Note that signposting is virtually non-existent, or even destroyed, particularly in the pastures.
