The Roche Solaire Sculpture Trail – Part Two

Continue exploring the Roche Solaire sculpture trail, around and on the Kohlberg, at the foot of the Donon.
On this route, you’ll discover works by artists from Germany, England, France and Ukraine.
Stunning panoramic views of the Bruche Valley and the Alsace plain.
It is entirely possible to complete both circular routes in a single day; to do so, the waypoint (7) from thefirst section becomes the waypoint (1) for this new route, and you simply need to follow the new stages.

Description of the walk

To reach the Abri au Sanglier, first head to the Wisches National Cemetery, accessible via Rue de la Gosse in Hersbach, then follow the forest road westwards for about 2.5 km.

(S/E) Take the unmarked path through the woods behind the shelter. Continue to the junction with the forest road.

(1) Head left to quickly find thefirst sculpture on the left, *Ombres*. Continue on to reach a Y-junction.

(2) Turn right and follow the ‘Yellow Saltire’ signposts along the Kohlberg Forest Road. You’ll come to a right-angled bend.

(3) Keep to the right on the track, passing the Kohlberg Shelter, to reach the junction at the foot of the Petit Donon, where thesecond sculpture, *Le Centaure*, stands in the middle of the junction.

(4) Turn left at almost 180°, continuing along the Kohlberg Forest Road (RF), now signposted with a Yellow Triangle. You will then reach thethird sculpture, *La Serrure Solaire*, situated on the right.

(5) Stay on the RF, then ignore the path leading uphill to the right and continue down the slope to the left. Carry on until you reach the junction with a small footpath.

(6) Leave the RF and head down to the left into the forest along this small path. Follow it to the forest track at the bottom of the descent. Ignore the path continuing straight ahead and carry on to the right along this unmarked track to reach thefourth sculpture, La Voile Solaire.

(7) Turn left again and stay on this Route Forestière du Plan Sable, marked with a Red Disc. You’ll reach another junction where thefifth sculpture, Dedans-Dehors, is located.

(8) Continue along this track to reach the Y-junction you passed earlier.

(2) Retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there to return to the Abri au Sanglier car park (S/E).

Great route, very well signposted. Just one comment regarding the Centaur: it’s hidden behind a screen of trees, and the descent down the narrow path is a bit tricky before the fourth sculpture. Otherwise, it’s a great trail.

I completed both routes on different dates, due to the risk of a thunderstorm during the first part.
The forest tracks may seem a bit long (it’s all relative), so you find yourself looking forward to discovering the next sculpture...
The short downhill path at point 5 is a real treat.

The footpaths aren’t particularly interesting, but it’s nice to come across the impressive sculptures as you walk (mostly through the forest).
