The sculpture trail – In situ around the Kegelplatz

Two sculpture symposia in 2007, in Lutzelhouse, and in 2010, in the Champenay quarry, gave rise to 17 monumental works under the titles In situ and La Roche Solaire. This trail will allow you to discover three of them.

Description of the walk

How to get to the starting point: by car from the D1420 or Lutzelhouse station, head towards the village centre. On your right, you will see the ‘Abrapa’ care home. When you reach the crossroads (with the town hall on your right), cross it, follow Rue de la Fontaine, then Rue de la Forêt. At the edge of the forest, the road is no longer tarmac. On your right is a hunting lodge; follow this road for 700 m to reach the car park near Place des Musiciens.

(S/E) From the square, follow the sign for “Chêne de la Vierge” (do not turn right towards Green Ring – Yellow Ring) by taking the path starting opposite the memorial stone. After 200 m, follow the Green Ring markings to the Chêne de la Vierge, continuing straight ahead. The first sculpture, “Les Têtes”, is opposite the Chêne de la Vierge. Continue on to the next star-shaped junction: the Kegelplatz junction.

(1) Turn left onto the Route Forestière des Pionniers and you will reach the Carrefour du Sentier Blanc.

(2) Continue along the main forest road on the left, the "Kappelbronn", marked with a white-barred Rectangle, until you reach thesecond sculpture, "Y". From the sculpture, keep right on the path marked with a white-barred Rectangle towards the Schliffstein Refuge.

(3) At the refuge, turn right at the hairpin bend, following the Red Ring markings, and you will reach a viewpoint.

(4) Turn right, then left. Continue straight on at the next junction, then turn right towards the La Porte de Pierre statue, located at the Carrefour du Partage.

(5) Take the second track on the left towards Kegelplatz. Then keep right on the path marked with the Green Ring and return to the Kegelplatz crossroads.

(1) Take the second forest track on the right and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Walking shoes, drinks, clothing and weather-appropriate protective gear.

Before setting off again, pop into "Montagne et Terroirs" at 166 Rue Principale, Lutzelhouse, where you’ll find a wide selection of farm produce from our beautiful valleys in Alsace and Lorraine, carefully selected
care, as well as a wide range of organic and eco-friendly products (tel.: 03 88 48 02 81 - 06 65 76 04 23).

Worth a visit

- Description of the work: a sketched trinity barely standing out from the original block, offering an ambiguous salute to the Virgin Mary to whom this place is dedicated.
- On your next walk in the area, discover the Kappelbronn Sequoia, planted in 1896, with a circumference of over 7 metres!
- Former loggers’ hut (note the fountain marked with the date 1904).
The Schliffstein Refuge, owned by the municipality of Lutzelhouse, has been made available to the Club Vosgien since 1976. On 13 April 2003, the refuge was destroyed by fire. It reopened on 1 May 2005.
- Description of the work: the hyperrealistic zip opens onto the landscape and plays irreverently with the sandstone, greeting the astonished hikers in a pop art style.
- Kegelplatz can be literally translated as ‘Skittles Square’.

A lovely walk, but you really need to take your time at the junctions to find the right path.

A lovely, easy route that’s suitable for everyone; the only downside is that you really need to take the time to check the map every time you change direction, otherwise you risk going the wrong way.

A relatively easy walk. We did it with children aged between 4 and 8 without any problems.
The only disappointment: the sculptures. We were expecting to see a few more along the way.

A short, easy walk, apart from a bit of confusion here and there. We’d hoped to see more than three sculptures.

It’s certainly an interesting route, but very poorly signposted.
That’s a real shame.
