From Schirmeck, follow the sign for "centre de réadaptation" (rehabilitation centre) on Rue de l'Ancien Sanatorium. Turn right onto the Colbéry forest road, then continue on the left and follow the "découverte des mines" (mine discovery) trail. You can park near a yellow barrier.
(S/E) Go through the barrier to reach the Colbéry shelter via the Blue Cross signposted path.
(1) Look for a wolf sculpture on the left: go up the path behind the wolf and follow the Chevalet Rouge markings.
(2) On the forest road, turn right and immediately take the path on your left: the entrance to the path is not very visible! Continue to follow the Chevalet Rouge markings, heading north towards Col de la Côte de l'Engin.
(3) Stay on the path on the left, following the red Chevalet markings.
(4) At the intersection, continue to your right, following the red signposts.
(5) When you reach this intersection, go down to the right, following the signs for "Abri du Kohlberg" marked with a yellow easel. Pass in front of the Klein Wisches refuge, also known as Abri du Kohlberg.
(6) At the crossroads, turn left towards "route forestière du petit Kohlberg". Follow the yellow triangle markings. Continue until you reach the marker post for plot number 73.
(7) Take the path on your right and climb through the fir trees. Be careful, this path is rarely used and therefore not very visible. Reach the summit of Kohlberg.
(8) From the summit, you have a 360° panoramic view of the valley. You can see the Petit Donon, the Grand Donon and the Struthof memorial.
Descend via the same path.
(7) Continue right on the forest road (yellow triangle).
(9) Look for the sculpture called "La serrure solaire" (The Solar Lock), set back a little to the right of the forest road. Continue along the road, then descend via the path on the left. At each intersection, keep left, following the yellow triangle markings. After descending into the forest, continue on your left for about 20 metres.
(4) Turn right to rejoin the small path you took on the way there.
(3) Turn left at the hairpin bend, continuing to follow the yellow triangle markings. You will arrive at a pretty sculpture called "dedans-dehors" (inside-outside).
(10) Continue right on the forest road, then turn left onto the forest road closed by a barrier (sign saying "no entry except authorised persons") to reach the Abri de Colbéry.
(1) Take the Blue Cross marked path opposite to return to the starting point (S/E).
. There is indeed a magnificent panorama at the top, ideal for a quick snack break if you're on your own, even if a few pine trees now hide the view a little. In the end, we walked about 13.5 km with an elevation gain of 540 m. But thanks to the author, we really enjoyed it.
