Description of the walk

Park in the Parking de la Liberté car park in Schirmeck behind the church.

(S/E) Head towards the tunnel to see some stairs. This is the start of the hike. Climb the stairs and follow the path south, marked with a red rectangle (GR® 5).
You will arrive at Schirmeck Castle.

(1) Continue along the path heading north-east, marked with a red rectangle. You will arrive at the Croix Walter crossroads.

(2) Enjoy the view over the Bruche Valley, then continue along the path on the left, marked with a red rectangle.
Pass in front of the Fontaine Léopold fountain before joining the Route Forestière (RF) de la Pépinière.

(3) Take the track on the right and continue along the Zybrink Farm. You will soon reach a crossroads.

(4) Take the path opposite, following the red rectangle markings. When you reach the D930, follow it to the left to reach the Ancienne Chambre à Gaz (Old Gas Chamber).

(5) Continue along the path that climbs to the right of the gas chambers, heading east, following the red rectangle markings, to reach the European Centre for Deported Resistance Members and the Struthof camp. You can visit these sites (admission fee applies).

(6) Then retrace your steps towards the gas chambers. When you reach the road, just before the last ones, turn right towards the north-east for a few metres until you reach the crossroads of the path in the first hairpin bend.

(7) Turn right, heading east, following the yellow rectangle markings. Pass under the concentration camp and see the watchtowers. Go around the camp to find another crossroads.

(8) Turn left onto the path that descends northeast.
At the first bend, you will see the Mer des Roches on your right. Continue along the path to reach the Cabane des Cinq Routes crossroads.

(9) Take the first path on the left that climbs north-west: this is the Route Forestière de l'Ordon Saxe. Stay on this road until you reach the bend you passed on the way out. Turn right to reach the Ancienne Chambre à Gaz crossroads.

(5) Follow the same route as on the way there, which takes you back to the crossroads near the Zybrink farm.

(4) Take the path on the left into the woods, marked with a yellow rectangle. At each junction, stay on the path marked with a yellow rectangle. You will then reach a track at the Roches Blanches junction.

(10) Cross this track and continue along the path heading north, still marked with yellow rectangles. After passing Basse Jacques Garrat, you will reach the Croix Walter crossroads.

(2) Retrace your steps to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

A beautiful and informative walk in the forest, but at point 10, the GR532 has been changed, so if you only follow the GPS, you will stray from the route for about 1 km.

A very pretty, easy route that runs entirely through the woods, making it pleasant even in hot weather...
A visit to Struthof and the gas chamber is a must, with impressive views of the barracks and watchtowers.
Very good advice from another hiker on the site for a picnic at the Baraque des 5 Routes, well beyond the camp and very comfortable in summer and winter.

Hello,

As for walking sticks, it depends a bit on the age of the users.

I wouldn't take any either.

A very beautiful hike, especially at the start. The visit to Struthof is poignant but necessary. The route is a bit challenging due to its length, but in my opinion, it does not require the use of walking sticks. The trails are always easy to navigate.

Bring some cash if you plan to visit Struthof (a must-see).
The gas chamber was undergoing renovation when I visited, but it is now open and can be visited without a ticket, as can the necropolis on the camp site itself. (The entrance ticket gives access to the camp and the memorial in Schirmeck, and costs around ten euros for both).
As you climb up to the camp, you realise that you are taking the same path as the prisoners did at the time, which gives you pause for thought.
A hike steeped in history and memory.
The rest of the hike is less historical, but just as powerful.

Start or end of the trail (stairs from the car park), quite steep and, above all, poorly maintained and even dangerous with broken guardrails. I suggest starting from the south, from the car park, following the river and passing in front of the fire station (drinking fountain on this section). This is a less tiring way to start the hike and much safer. At the castle, resume the normal route. A visit to the Struthof camp is a must.

A very beautiful hike with magnificent landscapes and views, especially in the first few kilometres after the start and the last few on the way back (80% of the hike is in the forest, as indicated in the description). The start is quite steep, but not difficult. Walking poles are recommended. We skipped sections 5 and 6 (going directly from point 5 to 7) and took 4½ hours, walking at a good pace and stopping to take photos.
