Le Bois de Mont

A very green route in the Artois hills, with two beautiful climbs and a minimum of roads.

This route, which is already difficult, becomes very difficult in wet weather. I walked it on 25/02/2026 and some of the paths were barely passable.

Description of the walk

Departure in front of Servins Town Hall

(S/E) Take the D75 towards Bouvigny. After 300 metres, turn right onto a good path.

(1) At the T-junction between the two pylons, turn left towards the large antenna. Reach the D75 and follow it to the right (a beautiful recent development allows you to walk safely). Leave it after 100 metres and take the path on the left (tarmac path reserved for pedestrians and cyclists).

(2) 500 m further on, turn right downhill onto theGR®®127(the descent can be a little dangerous in muddy conditions). Walk towards the houses and, shortly afterwards, turn right, following theGR®®. Stay on this good path and rejoin the D75.

(3) Follow it to the right and, 100 m further on, turn left (be careful, the entrance is not very visible: there has been a metal barrier there for some time) to cross the Institut Saint-François. A beautiful path artistically framed by barbed wire.

(4) At the tarmac road, turn left, then immediately right, staying on the GR®®. First turn right then left at the next crossroads to take the Chemin des Boisseaux, a tarmac road with painted bicycles.

(5) 500 m further on (end of the tarmac), at the crossroads, leave theGR®® and turn left at the hairpin bend (following the painted bicycles) to join Rue Salengro. Follow it for a few metres on the right, then turn left into Rue du Moulin. Continue without entering the housing estates and, at the last houses, you will reach a three-way junction.

(6) Take the path on the left. It turns 90° to the right, then diagonally to the left (ignore the track that goes straight ahead) and joins the tarmac road.

(7) Then turn right, then immediately take the right path opposite to reach a crossroads.

(8) Turn right onto a good path. After a good kilometre, you will find a trail on the right.

(9) Follow this path to cross the Bois de Carrenbassé and reach the D165.

(10) Cross it and continue to the hamlet of Marqueffles. At the entrance to the hamlet, take the street furthest to the left, cross the town and reach a crossroads with a retirement home on the left.

(11) Then turn left onto theGR®®127.

(12) At the three-way junction, continue straight ahead. Continue uphill on theGR® ®. The slope becomes steeper towards the end and you will reach a crossroads in the woods at an elevation of 182 metres.

(13) Turn left. This section is in terrible condition, especially in wet weather: you have to navigate around the edges of the "path" and sometimes walk in the mud. (see practical information). 1 km further on, you will reach a three-way junction.

(14) Leave theGR®® which branches off to the left and take the path opposite. There is a sign prohibiting all vehicles and frequent checks are carried out! This beautiful descent through the Bois l'Abbé valley leads to the edge of the woods.

(15) Then take the yellow-marked path on the right, which is not always in very good condition and takes you back into the woods. After a "rather wet" section, you will reach a three-way junction where the two paths separate.

(16) Turn right onto the Tortillard trail. Follow the yellow markings and, after a steep climb, you will reach a crossroads.

(17) Turn left at a 90° angle and head towards the western edge of the woods. There is a chapel on the left.

(18) Continue towards the Bois de Mont farm.

(19) At the crossroads, turn left onto the grassy path. After a right-hand bend, ignore the path coming from the left (you will arrive here if you follow thePR®® du Bois de Mont), walk along the motocross track and join the tarmac road. Turn right, then immediately left to walk along a small wood. After a 90° bend, you will reach a T-junction.

(20) Turn right.

(21) After 200 metres, you will find a path leading off to the left (ignored for years by IGN). Stay on this path to reach the Servins cemetery. At the tarmac road, turn right towards the church and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The trails in Bois de Mont are known to be difficult. The paths are often blocked by fallen trees.
Good shoes and walking stick(s) are essential!

At point 13: if the path on the left seems too difficult, you can take the path opposite to reach point 17. Then turn right to rejoin the route.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

We did this hike on 13 June 2024.
A beautiful but fairly difficult hike, with long climbs, muddy or stony paths, or paths with tall grass, some of which are rarely used.
But there are some very beautiful spots.
We were able to have a picnic in Marqueffles in the children's playground on Rue Boussingault.

Very beautiful hike, make sure you have good footwear (after a few days of rain, bring gaiters) as the paths through the woods are very uneven. Superb hike. Very little tarmac.
