Lakes of La Pra

This hike takes you to a series of lakes set like precious stones along the path from the Oursière waterfalls to the Col de la Pra, between wave-cut rocks and alpine flora.

This route, which is partly off-trail, is particularly treacherous: there is no way to keep to a schedule, as the fascinating landscapes compel you to linger and contemplate.

A small part of the route is off-trail but there are no difficulties with orientation.

Description of the walk

Preliminary remarks: read the practical information before embarking on this hike.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the Gâte road towards L'Oursière (signposted), first heading south-southeast, then, after crossing a ford, heading northeast. The path goes around a shoulder and heads south-east again, turning into a well-marked trail which, after a few hairpin bends and crossing three streams, reaches the foot of the Oursière waterfalls (see photos in summer and autumn) after the discreet ruins of the Chalet de l'Oursière.

Continue along the winding path towards L'Oursière (signposted), generally heading east. Please note that this part of the path can be dangerous in winter and may require crampons.

(1) Reach the first flat section of the Doménon above the waterfalls and continue along the almost horizontal path on the left bank of the torrent until you reach the sign for Oursière.

(2) At the sign, follow the direction of La Pra, still heading east, at the same level and as close as possible to the Doménon stream. The trail is sometimes cluttered with alders and passes through scree. At the bottom of the valley, it climbs northwards and forms numerous switchbacks that lead to the second plateau of Doménon.

On this plateau, where the stream meanders peacefully, continue west-northwest on the left bank until you find a place to ford the stream (it doesn't matter exactly where, but before the confluence of the Doménon stream with the stream from Lac Merlat (see track and IGN map).

(3) Once on the right bank of the Doménon, follow one of the faint paths on the right bank of the Lac Merlat outlet to the northeast, or - if you prefer - follow my GPS track, which explores a small valley inhabited by marmots and chamois. In any case, continue along the stream flowing from Lac Merlat, on the right bank and off the path, until you reach the lake's spillway.

(4) After visiting the lake, return to its spillway and continue gently uphill to the northeast until you reach a small plateau and pass between Galeteau and Roc de l'Hôpital (see viewpoint), where there is a pond that is usually dry by the end of spring. The Pra refuge is then quickly in sight.

(5) At the Refuge de la Pra, continue northeast on the path leading to the Col de la Pra to enjoy the view of Lac du Crozet.

(6) At the pass, turn back towards the refuge.

(5) Go around the refuge on the left. Descend a few steps and rocks to cross the footbridge over the main course of the Doménon. Immediately after crossing the stream, a three-way junction offers a choice between a slightly ascending path to the south-southeast towards Lac David and a slightly descending path along the stream towards Roc de l'Hôpital to the south-southwest. Follow the latter direction, staying carefully on the left bank of the stream, until you reach the circular Lac Claret.

(7) Pass the lake's spillway and continue either on the path or, as on my route, via the small chamois gully heading south-west towards the next lake, Lac Longet. When you see it, walk along its right bank.

(8) When you reach a fork in the path near the south-western end of the lake, look for a trail on the right that descends through a dip in the terrain and a small bend to the west. The secluded Lac Bernard will soon come into view. Take the trail on its right bank until you reach its spillway.

(9) Continue along the path to the south-west and go around the secondary pool of Lac Bernard, then cross a small grassy plateau to reach the main path that descends into the Longet outlet valley. When the slope becomes steeper, Lac Léama is visible below (see photo), nestled between the slopes of the Combe de Jasse Bralard. Descend the winding path to the lake, ignoring the path heading east towards the bottom of the Combe de Jasse Bralard.

(10) From the lake, continue along the path on the right bank, then cross the river and continue on the left bank. The balcony path continues south-west until it joins a trail at the Échaillon sign. Continue south-west along the mountain path until you reach Clôt des Vernes, just after a small lake bordered by a rock face.

(11) Continue southwest until you reach the next signpost under the Grand Sorbier.

(12) At the sign, turn right onto the path descending north towards L'Oursière. Continue the steep descent until you reach the L'Oursière sign.

(2). From there, turn left (west) to return to the path you took on the way up to the car park (S/E).

Notes

  • Park in the car park on Route de la Gâte, on a driveway below the hairpin bend that follows Les Seiglières on the road leading to Recoin de Chamrousse.
  • There is plenty of water, but there are herds of cattle, so bring a filter.
  • Dogs are allowed in Belledonne and the hike is very accessible for them, although it is long: large dogs and those with low stamina will require numerous breaks. In the presence of chamois, marmots, or herds, keep dogs on a leash!
  • The difficulty of this hike is due to the elevation gain and length. The short off-trail sections do not require any particular sense of direction.
  • There are no contraindications in case of bad weather (however, beware of ice in winter).
  • A bivouac near a lake is ideal for watching the aurora or twilight, see this photo. All lakesides are suitable for bivouacking, but Lac Merlat offers the most beautiful morning and evening light.

A night at the Pra refuge is also an option if you decide to explore more lakes (see variations below).

  • Standard hiking equipment is sufficient, except in winter when ice forms on the trail near the Oursière waterfalls. In this case, bring crampons, gaiters, gloves and an ice axe.
  • There are many opportunities to linger, so allow plenty of time. Wildlife hides quickly, so an early start allows you to observe it before the arrival of overly talkative hikers.
  • The IBP statistics for the trail give an index of 141HKG, a distance of 17.81km, a cumulative elevation gain of 1380m, a walking time of 6:39:49 and an average speed of 2.67km/h. This shows how captivating the landscapes are.
  • Orientation is easy as long as you use the terrain and, of course, the map to find your way. The IGN topographic map is relatively reliable (it lacks the names of major peaks such as the Grand Eulier, but the trail routes are more accurate than usual - in general, it is best not to rely too much on these very old IGN maps and always consider alternatives, i.e. loading aerial photos and OpenStreet Map hiking maps into the Visorando mobile app).

Alpage de la Pra

Worth a visit

the numerous flat areas where the Domènon winds its way between La Pra and the Oursière waterfalls are too crowded with hikers for wildlife to be easily visible. However, if you stray a few hundred metres from the trails or visit outside peak hours, you will see many chamois and marmots, especially near the lakes.

? The landscapes are simply captivating. Seethe album of this outing on Google Photos.

? There are many possible variations. It is of course possible to extend the walk to the Domènon, Crozet and David lakes, especially if you spend a night in a refuge or bivouac. It would take too long to describe such a 2-day hike in detail here, but the idea is to start from the Pré Raymond car park below Lac du Crozet, to reach it via its good path, to turn onto theGR® for Lac du Loup then Col de la Grande Sitre, to climb up to Lac Blanc then Col de Freydane, to descend to the Domènon lakes then to the Pra refuge and sleep there or at Merlat. The next day, do the loop described here in reverse, possibly climbing up to Lac David and not descending to the Oursière waterfalls (2), but returning to the lakes described above. As the elevation gain is less on the second day, it is possible to push on to the Roberts lakes before moving on to the Oursière.

An easier option is to park at Le Recoin and take the Chamrousse cable car to Le Clôt des Vernes (11) via Roberts Lakes (signposted for the lakes and then La Pra). Once you have completed the main loop of the hike, return to Clot des Vernes (11) and follow the signs for Roberts Lakes, then climb up to Brèche Robert Nord to return to Chamrousse via Lac des Pourettes.

a clot (see Clot des Vernes) is a flat area or a place suitable for grazing livestock. Vernes are shrubs, most often alders, which dot the mountain pastures.

A magnificent hike that takes you on a beautiful tour of the Pra lakes and along a variety of trails
I recommend following the trail and the directions, which are very reliable and often seem to be the best options (especially at the third crossing on the right bank of the Doménon, where the GPS trail explores a small valley with marmots, which is probably the smoothest and safest route)

Be careful at point 4, when heading towards Lac de la Pra. At the beginning of August 2025, there is a "closed" trail due to grazing (not recommended due to the risk of attack by sheepdogs). This is a very short section and it is still possible to pass through, or take a small detour to follow the official trails and avoid any risk.

The route is long but fairly consistent and pleasant (a steady climb with plenty of shade, followed by a relatively easy descent). If you are feeling fit, you can add the Domenon lakes (about an extra hour there and back), which will bring the total to around 24 km and 1,600 metres of elevation gain.

To discover the last lakes of La Pra (David, Robert, etc.), this route complements the " Discover the lakes between Chamrousse and the Refuge de la Pra " route (which is a little longer and more challenging; I recommend doing the Domenon lakes on this "Lacs de la Pra" route instead)

Hike with significant elevation gain. Watch out for falling rocks between points 2 and 3. Very beautiful route dotted with lakes and waterfalls. Lots of stones, rocks and gravel... take care with your knees and watch out for slipping.

Climb up to the Robert lakes from "Le Recoin" then rejoin the GR trail to reach the Pra refuge. On the way back, descend to the waterfall, then climb back up to the GR trail to return to the starting point.

The Gafe trail is still closed by municipal decree 27/05/2024.
However, access to the waterfall has been repaired with the addition of scree.
The scree slope below the Plaine de la Pra is not entirely continuous, so you need to be comfortable walking on large boulders and try to follow the old trail as closely as possible.
the La Pra refuge has been open since 6 June 2024. There is another access route via Lac Freydière.

a very beautiful hike that I have done many times.
however, two warnings:
The first waterfall you have to cross is very eroded, which makes it very dangerous, and some hikers no longer dare to cross it.
As already mentioned, a rockslide has buried part of the scree slope, making it difficult to find the path if you are unfamiliar with it, with large boulders blocking the way. The path systematically rejoins the edges in the last third of the route, so do not try to cut across as it is relatively unstable, but find the path, which is very easy if you stay on it.
A decree dated 25 August 2023 prohibits access, but many people still use the path.
Suricate tells me that the problem with the waterfall has been resolved, but I haven't gone to check

Thank you for this beautiful itinerary
Very beautiful scenery, varied and enjoyable hike
Please note that between points 2 and 3 in the scree after the plateau, there has been a rockfall, the path is no longer easy for a quarter of the climb and some rocks are unstable. Please take care.

A magnificent, varied loop that's a feast for the eyes (and the legs).

I extended the route a little from the Col de la Pra with a visit to the two lakes of Petit and Grand Domènon (well worth the detour with its eternal snow, but be aware that it adds 5km and 300m of elevation gain).

- I completed the loop alone in one day, setting off at 7 a.m
- Start and finish at the Oursière waterfall car park
- 22km
- 1,535 m elevation gain, 1,535 m elevation loss
- 9 hours of walking excluding breaks

I followed the GPS route, no problems.

Hike mostly redone in the snow (from the Oursière waterfall).
The weather was absolutely perfect: sunny enough to hike in a T-shirt on the snow all the way to the refuge. Really beautiful scenery, with a sea of clouds just leaving the peaks of the Vercors and Chartreuse mountains visible.

Very few people on this last day of August, postcard after postcard almost all the way along, because unfortunately the fog decided to join in.
But it was truly beautiful, splendid.
