Lake Nino from Poppaghia

Please note: a hiker reported in August 2026 that access to the lake is prohibited due to forest fires. Check before setting off.

A climb to a high-altitude lake, set in beautiful mountain scenery. A varied route that starts in a pine forest, continues through rocky terrain and ends amidst pastures. This hike offers an alternative to the much busierGR®®20route, which starts from the Col de Vergio.

Description of the walk

Start at the Poppaghia Forest House (elevation 1,076 m), on the road (D84) leading from the village of Albertacce to the Col de Vergio.

Yellow markings missing in places

(S/E) Take the path leading into the forest (east) towards the lake (signpost). Walk gently uphill, skirting the Crête d’Orsu Longu. Near a river (Ruisseau de Colga on the map), the path joins a forest track.

(1) Cross the track and continue due south through the pine forest, following the river. Take care not to lose the path. You’ll come to a path running at right angles (Chemin de Ronde de Valdu Niellu on the map).

(2) Take the Chemin de Ronde on the left for about fifty metres. Then leave this path and take the track on the right which continues southwards. Pass close to the Bergeries de Colga (on your right).

(3) Head south-east uphill. The landscape becomes very rocky, the slope steepens considerably and you’ll be walking over large slabs of rock. Keep a close eye out for the cairns, which are more common than the signposts.

(4) Follow a rocky gully (which is not difficult) and continue southwards to a pass known as Bocca â Stazzona.

(5) Lake Nino is nearby and clearly visible to the south-east. Descend gently towards the lake and reach its far end by skirting its eastern shore.

(6) The descent follows the same route as the ascent (S/E).
Alternative route – It is also possible to walk round the lake along its western shore (GR®®20) and then reach the Bocca â Stazzona pass by turning off to the right. This alternative route should be avoided in foggy conditions.

Notes

Although not particularly difficult, the section between (3) and (5) is steep and requires a good sense of balance in places. Make sure you wear suitable footwear.

There are no water sources along the route (and no information as to whether the river water is drinkable or not): please carry sufficient water supplies accordingly.

This walk requires a good sense of direction. A 1:25,000 map is essential (at the very least, the one accompanying this description). A compass can be very useful and won’t weigh down your rucksack.

Hike undertaken by the author on 24 September 2009.

Worth a visit

Shortly before (3) A beautiful pine forest before reaching the Bergeries de Colga.
(6) Lac de Nino offers a superb mountain setting and a lovely atmosphere. The ideal spot for a picnic.

The climb is challenging, but the view at the top is magnificent. At the end of the descent, make sure you follow the route and the markings carefully to stay on the right-hand side of the river.

A magnificent hike through varied landscapes, including a superb, shady forest, a steeper slope of rocks and slabs, and a summit leading up to the pass with short sections requiring the use of your hands to ‘climb’, though these are not particularly difficult. Reaching the lake is a reward that makes you forget the effort. Yellow markings are visible throughout the ascent and cairns help with navigation. The route description is also helpful. 2½ hours for the outward journey, as indicated. We didn’t take the same route back and instead did a less challenging but magnificent circular route along a ridge, though this significantly lengthened our journey (4 hours, including a seemingly endless walk through forests of pine, beech and birch). That’s 17 km instead of 11 km, and 6½ hours instead of 5 hours! So I can’t say what the return journey would have been like via the same route on the most challenging section.

A very beautiful but challenging hike, with sections over rocky terrain and stony ground.
Look up carefully to follow the markings, which aren’t always visible.
There are plenty of cairns to help you find your way.

Hike completed with my family (children aged 12 and 15 who are good walkers) using the GPX track, so I didn't use the description or route on the IGN map.
The first part is a reasonable climb through fairly shady woodland. The second part is steeper and rockier with less shade. At this time of year, it's easy to find your way and you're rarely alone. When you reach the lake, it's magnificent. In addition to day hikers like us, there are also hikers on the GR20 trail, but there is plenty of space, so it's easy to find a quiet spot to enjoy the scenery. In short, a very nice hike, I recommend it.

Hike completed in early June 2025. The climb is challenging but the reward of the view of Lake Nino from Bocca a Stazzona soon makes you forget the effort The description and previous reviews are perfectly accurate: a fairly easy climb through shady woods to the Colga sheepfolds. After that it's a steep climb with a few easy sections where you have to use your hands, but nothing too dangerous or strenuous. Don't hesitate to take your time and climb slowly, pausing regularly to take a breather and observe the scenery. The signposting is quite good and there are plenty of cairns, so there's no need to worry about orientation, but you need to keep your wits about you and once again take your time. I also got caught out on the way back to point 2 by staying too far to the right (see elway22's comment).

The second part of the hike was a bit strenuous, but the reward was there when you reached the lake.
I did this walk in April, so I had a 360° view of the snow-capped peaks.

A very pleasant hike for experienced and physically fit people. Quite technical and difficult from the refuge.
After the refuge, there are lots of small patches of ice. It's safer to bring crampons.

A magnificent hike that begins in a forest, continues through the rocks and ends at the lake and pozzines. Don't be afraid of passages where you have to use your hands. The signs are OK, but you have to stay focused! We had the pleasure of coming across wild horses, cows and goats! It took us less time than indicated on visorando (12km indicated on my watch with the tour of the lake).

Hello, the markings on the course are random and I notice a regular discrepancy between the distance of the routes on the application and my connected watch (Apple Watch ultra) of + 3 km, which is not great.

A very pretty destination, but in the middle of August, the number of GR20 hikers along the lake is mind-boggling and disturbing for me.
I climbed the peak to the north of the lake. It's easy to get to and gives you a good overview with a magnificent wooden cross. Allow 1h15 for the return journey.

A magnificent hike, a little difficult on the way up, but the astonishing beauty of Lake Nino is well worth it. It took me 7 hours to complete the hike, compared with the promised 5 hours, including short breaks. I found the descent more challenging because of the nature of the terrain (mainly large rocks). With hiking poles, my old TFL tendonitis left me in peace ☺️ We found a source of drinking water near the lake (on the right as you arrive). And you can refill your tank at another spring on the way back, in the village of Albertacce (on the left as you descend towards Calaccucia).

Superb hike but not easy at the end. You have to climb over pebbles. But what a beauty.
I did it with two children (aged 8 and 11). A bit long for them at the end.
You need to be well shod and fit.

A varied hike. The rocky sections, pozzines and Lake Nino are well worth the diversions.
