(S) From the Col de Vergio, rejoin theGR® which descends into the forest before following the contour line for a good distance, and finally climbing in hairpin bends to Bocca San Petru.
(1) At the pass, climb along the ridge on your left, where there are some beautiful beech trees twisted by the wind. Then reach Bocca â Reta at an altitude of 1,883 metres.
(2) Continuing a little further along this small path lined with short grass, you may find the source of the
Tavignano (river), (3) and you will arrive within sight of Lake Nino, which you will need to reach.
(4) Pass close to the lake's fountain. The path crosses the pozzines, a rather fragile plant formation. Stay on the path as you head east along the Tavignano river, first on the left bank and then on the right. Cross a small stream at the old Campiglione Refuge, then continue through the old beech trees.
Once you have passed these old trees, you will soon arrive at the Vaccaghja sheepfold.
(5) Descend to Pianu di Campotile, then climb back up to cross the small Col Bocca d'Acqua Ciarnente pass (separating Haute Corse from Corse du Sud). Follow theGR® trail, which takes you across a footbridge to the Refuge de Manganu (E).
We only did this hike as far as Lake Nino, but to make it a little more challenging, we started from the Vergio Pass. That was a very bad idea. We arrived at the top of the ski resort, then descended a little before climbing up an unmarked peak covered in scree. Then we had to descend to the St Pierre Pass to join the GR 20. On the way back, we stayed on the GR20 until Castel di Vergio, and then we only had 2 km to walk along the road to reach the pass and pick up the car. The hike is fantastic and much more enjoyable than the one that starts from the forest house. It is certainly longer, but the scenery is more interesting. Thank you for putting it on the website. Despite being tired, we had an excellent day.
