A circular walk around Lake Lessy and the Aiguille Verte de Chinaillon from La Culaz

The circular route described here follows trails that are less frequented than the traditional ascents to Lac de Lessy or L’Aiguille Verte. Setting off early in the morning allows you to reach the area above the Chalets de Mayse whilst enjoying the coolness of the forest. The arrival at the Col de la Forclaz may also be in the shade. The Aiguille Verte and the Pointe de Domingit offer a panoramic view of the Aravis range, with the Mont Blanc massif visible in the background. The descent to the La Gaudunière junction is busier, but further on you’ll find greater solitude – the price you pay being a fairly steep descent before returning to the starting point.

Description of the walk

The start point is at La Culaz, the Grand Bornand climbing site. From Grand Bornand, follow the Route du Chinaillon and turn left towards La Culaz, just before Chinaillon.

(S/E) From the car park at the La Culaz climbing site, take the path heading east for about 300 metres until you reach a fork.

(1) Head left onto the path climbing through the forest to Le Planay and then on to a pass.

(2) Shortly after the pass, the path turns right, heading north-north-east, and descends steeply towards the Chalets de Mayse.

(3) The Chalets de Mayse are clustered on either side of the track leading up from Le Petit Bornand. Take this track as it climbs up to the Col de La Forclaz.

(4) At the Col de la Forclaz, take a breather and admire Lac de Lessy and the group of chalets of the same name. Take the path on the right, heading east, and make your way to the pass known as Sous Buclon.

(5) Head as far to the right as possible along the ascending ridge. The path is narrow but clearly marked. You’ll reach the fork leading to the summits of the Aiguille Verte.

(6) Take the correct path on the right, which leads to one or both of the summits of the Aiguille Verte and the Pointe de Domingit.

(7) At the first summit, the Aiguille Verte, it is possible to reach the Pointe de Domingit, if you take great care. Between the Aiguille Verte and the Pointe de Domingit, extreme caution is required, as the passage between the two summits is steep and vertiginous. Turn back to the previous fork.

(6) Follow the ridge opposite to the pass.

(8) Turn left and descend along the main path, avoiding any shortcuts (due to erosion). This section is very busy; you will reach a junction with the GR®96, which leads to the traditional chalets of Cuillery and then on to the Col de la Colombière.

(9) Continue to the right along a track through the Samance pastures, until you reach the junction for Chinaillon.

(10) Keep to the right and leave the busiest section of the route here to reach the Chalets de la Gaudinière.

(11) Take the path that descends steeply to the left to reach the end of the road coming from Chinaillon.

(12) Head up the track to the right, pass La Bouvadière and continue to a junction signposting the direction of La Culaz.

(13) Head up to the right, towards La Culaz, and rejoin the original path.

(1) Carry on straight ahead and you’ll soon reach the car park at the La Culaz climbing site (S/E).

Notes

(S/E) The car park is very small. However, it is possible to park along the access road. There is a restaurant a few dozen metres away.

(3) There is a water tap amongst the houses. You can enjoy a light snack at the Chalet chez Bibolet.

(4) Heading down to the Chalets de Lessy allows you to stop at the Passe Montagne restaurant, walk round the lake and reach (5).
