Mont Lachat for beginners

This is a great opportunity to use the Grand-Bornand ski lifts to reach the base or summit of Mont Lachat via a figure-of-eight route, which can also be shortened depending on how far you want to hike.

Beautiful panoramic view of the mountains and peaks surrounding Le Grand-Bornand.
The Mont Blanc massif is not visible from the Mont Lachat viewpoint.

Ideal for beginners in alpine hiking due to its gradual progression and adaptability to different levels.

Description of the walk

At the top of the "Le Rosay" cable car (upper station) at an altitude of 1,445 m.

(S/E) Take the southbound tarmac path.

(1) Ignore the tarmac path on the left leading up to the Col de Châtillon and head south towards Covaleux (30 minutes).
After a few minutes, pass three alpine farms on the right, then the path descends alongside an unmissable alpine pasture on the left, accessible via a forest path. Ignore these and concentrate on the path that runs parallel to it just below on the left.

(2) Take the path on the left that heads east towards Covaleux.

(3) At a place called "sous les Arces", head east towards Covaleux.

(4) From Covaleux, go up the path and then the trail heading north to reach the Col de Châtillon path very close to the farm (where you can get something to eat).

(5) Turn left to climb up to the pass.

(6) On the Col de Châtillon path, turn right onto the wide track leading eastwards and, after several bends, ending at Mont Lachat de Châtillon.
(The route on the IGN map is approximate; the author's GPS route follows the actual path).

(7) At the large area where the cable car arrives, cross towards the south-east and pass to the right of the operations chalet to take a path leading up to the viewpoint.
Descend all the way down the service road to the Col de Châtillon.

(6) Turn right onto the path descending north-west to reach the initial crossroads.

(1) Turn right towards the return cable car (S/E).

Notes

Ski lifts accessible via the Bouchet valley road to Le Grand Bornand:
1st section: "Le Rosay" gondola lift, €8 in 2019 (ascent and descent).
2nd part: Lachat chairlift. Ask to include it in the return ticket for the1st part if you do not want to walk from Châtillon to Lachat.

Food and drink:
As you might expect, at the top of thefirst section, "Le Rosay", there is everything you need to eat and drink during the season.
More locally, there is a farm in Châtillon offering light refreshments when you reach the Col de Châtillon.
There is no water or food at the top of the viewpoint, but there are tables at the arrival point of the chairlift.

Equipment:First section towards Chatillon: low-cut shoes, walking poles recommended.
Second section from Châtillon to Lachat: low-cut shoes at least, walking poles necessary to negotiate the steep climb in places.

Based on these elements and your level, you can choose from several simplified routes:
For example:
(S/E) Go from (2) to (6), then descend to the pass and take the chairlift up to Mont Lachat.
Descend by chairlift or by the path from (7) to (S/E).

Alternatively, go up from (S/E) to (6), then return via (4) and (2) (more difficult in this direction).

Worth a visit

Mont Lachat is a popular paragliding launch site, especially in summer for first flights, which are a real spectacle!

A beautiful hike to do early in the morning during the summer, as the summit of Mont Lachat is accessible by chairlift at this time of year, which inevitably attracts crowds.
The first part of the hike is along a trail under the trees and is very pleasant.
The climb to the summit is on a track, but the magnificent view makes up for it.

This is a popular spot for paragliding, and you can watch the ballet of take-offs and flights from the summit.

Don't hesitate to take the short panoramic loop at the summit, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area, including the Aravis mountain range and the Aiguille Verte. Three panoramic tables at the summit complete the experience.

On the way back, you can continue on to the Lac de la Cour, which also offers beautiful scenery.

Enjoy your hike!

Hike done in the direction indicated.
The first part is well shaded, very pleasant under the pine trees at times. The climb up Mont L'Achat is physically demanding but well worth the effort. There is no shade on this climb. Magnificent scenery. We enjoyed this hike

A beautiful hike to the Châtillon Pass. The climb up the trail is very tedious.
However, the view of the Aravis Massif with Pointe Percée from the Mont Lachat de Châtillon viewpoint is splendid.
