Tour of the Roc des Arces

A circular hike offering an unforgettable panoramic view of the Aravis range, followed by the Bargy range. Quite demanding, it is suitable for both summer and winter, provided you have snowshoes.

Description of the walk

Park in the large car park on the Route de l'Envers du Chinaillon, which is used by skiers in winter.

(S/E) With your back to the stream, head up the Route de l'Arbelay.

(1) At the first junction, turn left uphill onto the Route des Granges du Chinaillon.

(2) At thesecond farm, take the farm track on your left which climbs towards the woods and leads to Arbelay d'en Haut.

(3) As you leave the woods, cross the mountain pasture and take the path known as the Côte, which climbs steeply into the woods. In winter, the route goes round the farm to the north-east, then rejoins the same path.

(4) At La Côte (where the Rosay cable cars arrive), turn right towards the south-west to follow the route of the ski run linking to La Joyère in winter and a footpath in summer. Cross the La Joyère piste in winter or the field in summer to reach the Chemin de la Taverne heading towards Le Croix. Turn right and walk for about a hundred metres to reach the junction between the farm and the chairlift station.

(5) Turn left and gently descend the path towards the Auberge du Croix, heading south-west.

(6) At the Auberge du Croix, turn left onto the Chemin de la Grande Montagne and follow it to the junction with the Route de Covaleux at Les Touillettes: the stone marker is inscribed in Savoyard, Covalo.

(7) At Les Touillettes, follow the path on the left towards Covaleux.

(8) In the hamlet of Covaleux, take the short link on the left between the end of Chemin de Covaleux and the Col de Châtillon path. It is poorly marked as the old path used to run in front of the building on the right. From the end of Chemin de Covaleux, you can see the hiking sign 30 metres above, which you need to reach.

(8) Turn right and head uphill to join the Chemin du Col de Châtillon at the farm of the same name. Turn left to reach the pass.

(9) Head down the farm track. 100 m above the Languières farm, the track veers left and cuts through the woods towards the west. In winter, do not follow the farm track, which turns into a ski run; instead, walk on the left-hand side of it.
At the T-junction, turn right to reach the Lachat chairlift departure point.

(10) Turn left and head down the Route des Outalays.

(11) At the edge of the woods, take the Sentier des Outalays on your left. It emerges further down on the road of the same name. Follow it to the bottom to reach the Route de l'Envers de Chinaillon. Then head down to the left to reach the car park at the start (S/E).

Notes

The route can be tackled on foot in summer or on snowshoes in winter.

In winter, on fine skiing days, especially at weekends, the car park can be full.

Worth a visit

On leaving La Joyère, you will find a very traditional mountain inn, highly recommended for a pleasant buffet stop with views of the Aravis range: the Auberge du Croix.

We added the climb to Roc des Arcs, which was great.
The short climb is not easy because it is very steep.
But it's well worth the effort because the view is magnificent.

A lovely walk with beautiful views – be careful in hot weather as there is little shade.
There is indeed a problem between points 4 and 5 - take the path to the tavern as the path indicated does not exist and it is forbidden to cross the fields.
At point 8 (hamlet of Covaleux), turn right 100 metres before the hamlet and go around the buildings on the right. It is possible to pass through, but several signs advise against it.

The car park at the back isn't well known to locals.
You need to park in the MATTE car park, right at the start of the walk.

The route is no longer valid. At Rosay station, follow the signs for "COL DE CHATILLON".
You no longer pass the Auberge du Croix; the path no longer exists and the inn is closed.
For the return journey, we turned back at point 4 to avoid taking the road.
A lovely walk.

A lovely route with some stunning views. The first section is quite shaded, which is nice on the climb, especially when it’s hot like it was today!
We’d already walked this mountain twice before, but starting from different points; not going through the woods means you get absolutely fantastic views, though the sun is beating down hard!!
We came down the same way we went up to avoid walking down the road – it’s nicer and more shaded

I hesitated for a long time because, despite the appeal of the hike, there were no reviews. I took the plunge and I’m glad I did: a superb hike – don’t hesitate! Just one minor point about the return journey: when heading back to the ski resort, take the path you came up on; otherwise, you’ll have to walk back along the tarmac road. It’s not a motorway, mind you – I only passed three cars on this long weekend Friday – but I would have preferred to take the path I came up on if I’d known. Still, the setting remains stunning whatever happens.
