The Three Passes Traverse (Monts du Lyonnais)

A classic and accessible route through the Monts du Lyonnais, mainly through woodland, with occasional views of the Lyon conurbation and the Alps in good weather. Views also extend to the Monts du Lyonnais and the Val de Saône.
Also popular with mountain bikers, the route takes you over three passes, starting either from Fontrijole (where there is a small car park for the recommended start point) or from La Luère (better known to locals), via the Col de la Croix du Ban.

Route improved between points (3) and (4) following comments regarding private property.

Description of the walk

Parking at the Col de Fontrijole (see details below in practical information).

(S/E) From the car park, head south-west along the GR® de Pays Tour des Monts du Lyonnais.

(1) You’ll soon come to a first junction, after the view to the left towards Lyon and the Alps on a clear day. Leave the GR® and turn right up a slight incline, then continue along the main path until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Bois Charnay signpost / alt. 535 m. Chemin de la Font Vivier. You have a view towards the Arbresle region to the west.
Turn left towards the Col de la Croix du Ban, 1.3 km away. You begin an ascent. Above the deforested area, you can see, to the north, towards a quarry at Saint Jean des Vignes and the Val de Saône.
At the 625m mark, head right, south-west, leaving the path through the broom thicket on your left. Reach the Col de la Croix du Ban (604m).

(3) Small junction: be sure to turn right to avoid heading straight towards the houses/private properties

(4) Continue straight ahead, along the path that follows the boundary of the district capital and forms part of the GRP®.

(5) You arrive at the old Col de la Croix du Ban (cross and junction). Head straight on and continue uphill along the GRP®, towards the Col de la Luère. You’ll come to a fork.

(6) Keep straight ahead on this same wide GRP® path.

(7) Pass the relay mast. Continue straight on along the GRP® path to reach the Col de la Luère, at the road.
This pass can serve as the other starting point for the hike. If you have the energy, you can extend the walk along the paths opposite (take care when crossing at the road junction) to reach the Château de Saint-Bonnet-Le-Froid and its view of the Monts du Lyonnais. Allow 20 minutes to get there. Then return towards the Col de la Luère)

(8) At the Col de la Luère (coming from the Col de la Croix du Ban), turn around and head towards the relay mast.

(7) Turn left and reach the highest point of the hike, at an altitude of 741 metres.
This path is narrower and you may encounter mountain bikers coming down. Area deforested in 2020/2021 with possible changes to the path.
For the less adventurous: return via the GRP® to the previous junction.

(6) Follow the GRP® route from the outward journey to the Col de la Croix du Ban.

(4) Cross the pass and, at the road, head straight on, north-east, for a return route along the GRP®, different from the outward journey, which takes you to the junction you passed earlier on the way out.

(1) Continue to the right, along the GRP®, to reach the (S/E).

The route suggests there will be some stunning views of Lyon, the Alps and the western side
It runs almost entirely through woodland, so there isn’t much visibility once the vegetation has grown in

A really lovely hike, done in light snow, which made it even better!
There were a few runners and mountain bikers, but overall we were on our own most of the time.

The route was almost entirely through the forest, really pleasant and peaceful, perfect for us as we were out walking our dog.

It would be a real shame to stop at the Col de la Luère (a tarmac road with no views), so we recommend extending your walk just a little further (5 minutes for unobstructed views of Lyon, or 15 minutes to reach the Château de Saint-Bonnet-Le-Froid and its views of both Lyon to the west and the Monts du Lyonnais to the east).
A really lovely walk!

Shortly after setting off, we took a wrong turn: you need to turn right after the last house and keep right at the first fork in the path.
At the Col de la Croix du Ban, the route description does indeed suggest crossing private property with a gate and a guard dog. It is better to go round to the west and then take the first path that climbs to the right, which brings you back onto the route.

A route that is almost entirely through woodland: best saved for warm days!

A pleasant walk.
The route needs to be altered: the route to point number 3 (Col de la Croix du Ban) crosses private property. This should therefore be avoided by taking the path to the east earlier on, which joins the return path, and reaching point 3 via that route.
In any case, a very pleasant walk
Thank you
