Warning from the moderator on 24/09/2020: Please note! It is no longer possible to park in the car park and around the castle at the start of the hike, but you may be able to park on the D70 which passes through (2) and (8).
Start at the Château du Haut Poirier.
(S/E) Continue west on the road known as Chemin du Poirier. Ignore the paths that branch off to the right and left. The carriage road gradually turns into a rocky path and enters the forest after passing under a power line.
(1) After about 500 metres, take the path that climbs into the woods on the left. It will quickly lead you to a radio-controlled car route. Continue to the tarmac road.
Note: see possible alternative in the practical information section.
(2) Cross the road and take the path that leads into the woods opposite on the left. After about 300 metres, ignore the path that branches off to the left and continue straight ahead uphill. Be careful, as the path is very steep, rocky and can be very slippery in wet weather. Ignore the first path on your right, but take the next one that heads off to the right on level ground.
(3) After a bend (depending on the season, you will be surrounded by ferns), take the path that climbs to the left, straight up the slope. It will take you to the top of hill 566.
(4) From the clearing at the top, a path descends steeply. Follow it. It is very steep and surrounded by rocks and pebbles, so caution is advised if you are not comfortable on tricky terrain. When you reach a small road, turn right.
(5) When you reach the pass a few dozen metres further on, take the path that branches off to the left on the other side of the small road. Go behind a group of residential buildings. The path, markedGRP® (red and yellow), is still quite steep and climbs through the forest. Ignore the marked path on your right that leads to Bois Charnay.
(6) At the next crossroads, leave theGRP® and follow the path that branches off to the left. Walk alongside the remains of old farm walls for a while. When you reach a small valley, take the less steep path that branches off to the left. Pass by a fir tree plantation. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths that branch off to your right, until you reach the hamlet of Larny.
(7) If you are lucky, you can visit the small Romanesque chapel in Larny. Take the small lane that runs to the right of the chapel and join a road.
(8) A few metres to the left on the road, a path descends to the right. Take it and follow it. The path becomes a trail, running alongside a stream (which overflows its banks in wet weather, making it a little tricky to cross). When you reach a carriage road, continue straight ahead. The path climbs a hill and then descends towards a small valley.
(9) Before the farm, a path branches off to the left. It will take you on an easy climb back to the starting point (S/E).
