The Rigole de Boulet and La Motte aux Anglais, starting from La Plousière

A short walk along the Rigole de Boulet, which feeds the upper section of the Ille and Rance Canal. Set amongst trees and following wide paths, this walk is magnificent in the colours of spring and autumn and well-shaded in summer. You’ll forget about tarmac roads the whole way.
You can extend the walk along the banks of the canal (at the Ville Morin lock) or along the Rigole de Boulet to the hamlet of Le Mée.

Description of the walk

The start is at the Ille and Rance Canal, where it crosses the D82, at a place called La Plousière, 1.5 km north of Guipel. Car-sharing car park nearby.

(S/E) Start from the D82 bridge crossing the canal and follow the north bank of the canal heading east. You will then walk alongside the reservoir feeding the canal.

(1) Continue along the towpath.

(2) Before the Ville Morin lock, at the mouth of the Rigole du Boulet, cross it and turn left. Follow the canal northwards along its left bank, walking up the path that runs alongside it. Continue for about 3.5 km, noting the archaeological site of La Motte aux Anglais on the right after 1.5 km (information sign). Reach the bridge at Le Mée.

(3) Cross the canal to the left via the bridge. After about fifty metres, at a fork, turn left. Take the forest track that branches off to the left after the last house. Continue along this track until you reach the road leading to the Herbage farm.

(4) Walk straight through the hamlet of l'Herbage. Then, on leaving the hamlet, take the farm track that continues from the road. Follow it until you come to a small pond on your right.

(5) Take the sunken path on the left, cross a stream, and continue to the next hamlet.

(6) At the first house in the hamlet of La Motte aux Anglais, turn right following the sign for the “Route des moines”. The path descends due south along the edge of fields and meadows. Ignore a path branching off to the right (not shown on the IGN map).

(7) At yellow marker no. 20, a slope blocks the path southwards. Take the path on the right (west). Follow it to the second slope, which leads off to the left.

(8) At this point, there is a three-way junction in the path: on the right, a sunken track; on the left, our less marked path which runs alongside the embankment and heads south again. Follow the latter. The path widens after the first field. Descend until you reach the tarmac road at Ville Morin.

(9) Continue straight on, ignoring a road on the right. About a hundred metres further on, after the first house, take a short lane on the right leading to a footbridge.

(1) Return to the towpath you followed on the way out and follow it to the right along the reservoir. This will take you back to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Shops in Guipel.

Variation (Extension): It is possible to combine this walk with the walk“Le tour de la Plousière via the Rigole de Boulet”(Visorando) to form a circular route of approximately 13 km. Both walks share the same starting point. Point (7) of this walk corresponds to point (3) of that walk.

Worth a visit

Archaeological site of La Motte aux Anglais (11th century) between points (2) and (3)

The Ille and Rance Canal links Rennes to Dinan. The starting point of this walk is situated at the highest point of the canal (the leat). Numerous locks (particularly near Hédé) add to the charm of walks along the towpaths.

When the canal was in operation, the Rigole de Boulet channel supplied water to the canal from the Étang du Boulet (in the commune of Feins). The channel is now partially dry. Its total length is 17 km between its mouth and the Étang de Boulet. A footpath runs alongside it from end to end.

A pleasant and easy walk. Signposting is a bit patchy in places, but you can find your way with a GPS. We did this walk in winter and the paths were practically passable throughout
Thanks for this walk

A lovely route along the most beautiful waterway in Ille-et-Vilaine. Other routes in the surrounding area allow you to enjoy these beautiful spots around Étang du Boulet and the Ille-et-Rance Canal. A truly beautiful route in the heart of the countryside, with few roads to follow.

A very easy route, lovely in February in the sunshine. It can be quite windy, though, except when following the ditch. Take care between points 8 and 9: you’re actually walking along the edge of a field, so don’t follow the path through the woods after point 8.
Otherwise, a very good map that’s very easy to follow on Visorando; this makes up for the markings, which are often contradictory.

A very easy route with no elevation gain. The first part is almost entirely in the shade, which isn’t the case on the way back.
There are no signposts, but the description makes it easy to find your way.
Be careful at point 8: in June, the path doesn’t exist (buried under uncut grass?), so you have to walk practically through the cultivated field, which is a bit of a shame!
Otherwise, dragonflies, butterflies and other insects accompany you throughout the section where you follow the old drainage channel.
