The Plaine du Calvaire

Park in the car park on Route de l’Église.

(S/E) Leave the car park and head left. Turn right onto the first road, Route du Valrandon. Pass the T-junction with Route de la Briqueterie on your right.

(1) Turn right into Impasse du Maréchal-Ferrant and follow the road until you reach a T-junction, Rue Pierre Six. Turn left and, at the end, follow the street as it bends to the right.

(2) Turn left onto Rue des Jardiniers in the village of Valmont and continue to a T-junction. Turn right onto Rue Albert Bellavoine, pass the police station on your left and take the first right. Place de la Gare; continue to the end of the street to the T-junction.

(3) Turn left onto Rue Jules Crochemore, follow the street for 200 metres until you reach the square. Turn right onto Place du Docteur Robert Greverie, follow the street up to the steps of the church. Turn left, walk alongside the church, turn left immediately after passing it and walk down the street to the bottom.

(4) Go round the roundabout on Rue d’Estouteville, continue straight ahead, passing the Vivier on your right. At the T-junction, turn right onto Route de l’Europe. Take the first left onto Rue Suzanne Mera and continue straight on, passing the cemetery on your left.

(5) At the X-junction, turn left towards Thérouldeville onto Rue du Stade, and go round the next roundabout. After the church, take the first right onto Rue du Presbytère. At the T-junction, turn left onto Rue de la Corderie until you reach the left-hand bend.

(6) Turn right onto Rue du Champ de la Porte and take the first right onto Rue de la Charronnerie. Pass the crossroads and continue to the next right-hand bend.

(7) At the bend, take the path on the left to reach Rue de la Linerie in the hamlet of “Le Haut Héloin”. At the crossroads, turn left onto Route du Haut et Loin, and continue to the next junction.

(8) Cross the Route de Sassetot and, opposite, take the Route des Colverts to the hamlet of Daubeuf. At the crossroads, take the Impasse des Perdrix straight ahead and continue along the track to the T-junction. Turn left and continue to the road.

(9) At this T-junction, turn right onto Route de Daubeuf. Pass the wayside cross at the hamlet known as ‘la Plaine du Calvaire’. At the next junction, in the village of Angerville-la-Martel, turn left onto Route de Limerville (D33). Pass the cemetery on your right and continue to a junction.

(10) Turn left onto Route de l’Église to reach the car park (S/E).

Angerville-la-Martel:
A pleasant site comprising Saint Martin’s Church, the 16th-century vicarage, the beech grove and the grassed square.
Saint-Martin’s Church was extended in the 16th century. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1772 after being struck by lightning; it was struck by lightning again and rebuilt in 1837.
The war memorial.
The lantern tower in Ypreville dates from 1936 and was built by Father Maurice in memory of the (now vanished) lepers’ cemetery. A purple light can be seen at dusk.
The Calvary: ‘Look upon this Christ and keep the faith’, on the road from Angerville to Daubeuf.

Valmont:
A small town steeped in history, it boasts numerous monuments, including:
The castle of the d’Estouteville family, comprising an 11th-century keep and a Renaissance wing. This imposing castle has undergone numerous alterations and had many owners, including the Grimaldis of Monaco and the Barbets of Rouen. Large grounds open to the public.
Notre-Dame-du-Pré Abbey: it was founded by Nicolas d’Estouteville in 1169. Of the ruined abbey church, the superb central chapel known as the ‘Six-Heures’ chapel remains intact; it houses finely carved recumbent figures of the d’Estouteville family, stained-glass windows dating from 1552, and a sculpted group attributed to Germain Pilon. Eugène Delacroix stayed on several occasions at Valmont Abbey, with his cousins, between 1813 and 1840, and painted the picture *Ruins of Valmont Abbey* there, now in the Louvre Museum. It is against the backdrop of this abbey that the first chapter of Maurice Leblanc’s *The Hollow Needle* is set.
