The Bétaille plain

This walk will take you through a pretty village, its lively centre with shops, the old wine press, the fountain-wash house, etc. We’ll leave the village for a circular walk through the Bétaille plain and its walnut groves, as well as the banks of the River Espérance, the Ragou! We’ll rejoin the Palsou to follow its most scenic stretch, then take the old irrigation canal to the watermill before returning to the village.

Description of the walk

Park in the town hall car park.

(S/E) From the information sign for the orange-marked route, head towards Place de la Fontaine and take the steps leading to the fountain and wash house. Then turn left onto Rue de la Châtellenie for 100 m, then turn left towards the restaurant.

(1) Cross the D803 carefully at the pedestrian crossing and continue straight ahead, crossing the level crossing. You will reach the T-junction with Route de Cam Redon at a place called La Bouygue.

(2) Turn right, then, after about 20 metres, turn left onto Route de la Dordogne.

(3) Take the first path on the right and cross over the Palsou. Follow this stony path for about 800 m, ignoring the turnings on the right, until you reach the junction with another cross-path.

(4) Turn left to reach Rouquet. Cross this hamlet and continue straight on to the Dordogne.

(5) Carry on straight ahead, following the river on your right: old dredging site and sawmill. Further on, the path moves away from the river and winds through woods and fields.

(6) Turn left onto the Route des Issartoux, then opposite onto the Route de Moutou and arrive at a T-junction in the hamlet of Coudène.

(7) Turn right to follow a ditch: the Ragou. You’ll come out onto the D20 (Route de Carennac).

(8) Cross with care, take the path opposite which runs along a row of trees on the left to reach a grassy path straight ahead. Pass the junction on the left and the one on the right and continue straight on towards a path winding through the bushes.

(9) Turn left to rejoin route no. 2. Follow the path running alongside the Palsou for about 1 km, taking the old water mill supply channel for the final section. Climb the slope to rejoin the D20 at a bridge.

(10) Cross carefully and follow the Palsou again along the canal as far as the mill.

(11) Go round the mill on the right to rejoin the tarmac road and turn left.

(2) Turn right and follow the outward route in the opposite direction.

(1) Cross the D803 again with the same care to return to Rue de la Châtellenie and then the town hall car park, which will be on the right (S/E).

A easy route that allows you to enjoy the beautiful village of Bétaille. The route has two contrasting sections: the first part follows wide paths through the walnut groves. After crossing the D20, you follow a narrow path that winds through the undergrowth, creating a very idyllic setting. As there is little shade at the start, it is best to avoid this route during a heatwave.
