Entre Palsou et Dordogne

This walk will take you through a pretty village, its lively centre with shops, the old wine press, the fountain-wash house, the church... You’ll leave the village for a circular route offering varied scenery, from the banks of the “River of Hope” towards the hills of the hamlets of Laborie and Chapou; a gentle descent will bring you back to the Palsou and the Bétaille plain. We’ll follow the old water channel that once fed a watermill; we’ll cross our beloved Palsou once more near the school to return to the village...

Description of the walk

Start at the high street square (convenience store and newsagent, butcher’s and delicatessen, bread shop, post office, toilets).

(S/E) From the information sign for the orange-marked route, head towards Place de la Fontaine and take the steps leading to the fountain and wash house. Turn left onto Rue de la Châtellenie and follow it for 100 m, then turn left towards the restaurant. Cross the D803 with care and continue straight ahead, passing the level crossing.

(1) At the T-junction, turn right, then after about 20 metres, turn left onto Route de la Dordogne.

(2) Take the first path on the right and cross over the Palsou. Follow this stone-paved path for about 800 m, ignoring the turn-offs on the right.

(3) At the T-junction, turn left towards Rouquet. Cross this hamlet and continue straight on to the Dordogne.

(4) Follow the river on your right (old dredging site and sawmill). Further on, the path moves away from the river: head between the woods and fields.

(5) Leave the Issartou road on your left and continue straight on. At the end of the path, follow a small road to the left.

(6) Cross the D20 with care and take the D30 opposite. Take the first right, the Route des Champs Pointus.

(7) At the next junction (house no. 534), turn right. After about 300 m, turn left and pass between two houses (public path). Climb slightly towards the hamlet of Laborie, then turn right onto a grassy path.

(8) Take a narrow lane leading to the bread oven (in poor condition). Turn left, cross the D116 with care, then turn right and follow the signposts.

(9) At the crossroads (a place called Les Tourretes), turn left twice and walk past some pigsties.

(10) When the road turns left, continue straight on along a dirt track (solar panels). Take the first track on the left and follow the edge of a wood. Climb up and, at the top of the hill, turn right onto a well-marked field track.

(11) At the end, turn left towards a large oak tree and a farm. Walk alongside it, then descend the gentle slope.

(12) Cross a road and continue straight ahead along a grassy path. Join the D30 and follow it to the right.

(13) Just before a level crossing, take a farm track to the left. Wind your way through the trees.

(14) At the “Le Palsou” sign, turn left and follow the stream on your right (uneven ground). Shortly afterwards, turn right. The path follows the stream for about 1 km. The final section follows the old water channel that fed a watermill.

(15) Climb the small slope and carefully cross the D20 at the bridge. Follow the Palsou again along the canal as far as the mill.

(16) Go round the mill on the right to rejoin the tarmac, then turn left.

(1) At the next junction, turn right and, following the route in reverse to the outbound leg, return to Rue de la Châtellenie and then the shopping square (S/E).

We took a wrong turn. After point 14, the sign indicating the right turn is poorly positioned; we didn’t see it. The rest of the route is well signposted.
There are a few weeds and nettles to clear, but overall it’s a lovely route, especially the final section which follows the stream.

Thank you for your feedback, which will help us improve...
It’s true, some sections are too grassy, even prickly...! And this year, the rain is really helping the vegetation grow!
We’re going to add a new route to explore a charming little hamlet.
Another one to split the route in two... we’ll see...

This walk could be divided into two sections: the valley and then the Causse. The first section, which follows the banks of the Dordogne only briefly, is rather monotonous and mainly takes you along small tarmac roads through fields. The second section, on the Causse, is much more pleasant and varied. The final two kilometres, where you walk alongside the stream, are very pleasant. A lovely finish! There are some beautiful houses to see along the route!
Between points 7 and 8, the vegetation makes the path difficult to navigate, and after point 11, the nettles are very tall and rather unpleasant.
This walk is not difficult; we completed it in under 3 hours, including breaks. Please note there is very little shade
Thanks to the team who created it and to those who marked the route so perfectly. We had a lovely morning thanks to their dedication.
