The Mountain of the Ponds

On this route, you’ll come across some famous sections, such as the Bois Pairé on the left-hand edge between points (6) and (7), as well as from point (8) to (9), and of course don’t forget the lovely walk through the Bois du Foulon.

Description of the walk

The route starts at the car park by the Charny pond.

(S/E) Head due south for a few metres until you reach the D16. Cross the road and turn right for about 150 m, then take the path on the left which soon joins a road.

(1) Continue along the road, ignoring a turn-off to the left 100 m further on. Take the path leading uphill to the right and join a road.

(2) Cross the road and head straight ahead along the main road. As soon as it bends to the right, join a path. Follow it to the junction. Turn left onto the road and continue to the next path on the right.

(3) Cross the road and head straight on along the path which leads to a cross-path. Turn right and join the D16. Cross with care and continue to the right until you reach the next junction.

(4) Turn left, walk through the hamlet of Les Journées and, as soon as the road bends left, take the path on the right which soon joins a cross-path. Turn left and you’ll soon reach a road.

(5) Head right along the path which leads to the four-way crossroads. Carry on straight ahead until you reach a road. Cross carefully and continue straight ahead for 100 m.

(6) Turn left onto the path, following the edge of the Bois Pairé on your left. Take the next path on the right, which leads to a cross-path 200 metres further on.

(7) Turn left. Immediately afterwards, ignore the paths to the left and right. Carry on until you reach a road.

(8) Cross the road and head straight ahead. A little further on, ignore a path on the right and carry on until you reach the junction with the main road. Head straight ahead and, a little further on, you’ll reach another road.

(9) Carry on straight ahead along a wide track. As soon as it turns left, leave it. Carry on straight ahead along a track (not shown on the IGN map) which leads to a road.

(10) Turn right until you reach the crossroads. Cross it and head straight ahead. Start the climb and, a little further on, join a crossroad.

(11) Turn left and, after 200 metres, you’ll reach another cross-road. Cross it and head right for about a hundred metres. Turn left onto the path which descends through the woodland and joins a cross-path.

(12) Turn right and you’ll come out onto a road. Continue straight on along this uphill road until you reach a crossroads.

(13) Head left. Take the next road on the left, which goes downhill and leads to the hamlet of Plénoise. Pass through the hamlet and carry on until you reach the next road on the right.

(14) Carry on straight ahead along the path through the woodland, with the Ouanne on your left. Ignore the next path on the right which goes uphill and carry on to the next path on the left.

(15) Ignore this path on the left. Carry on straight ahead for 100 m. Ignore the path going uphill on the right and, immediately after that, the one on the left. Carry on straight ahead along the road to return to the starting point (S/E).

A pleasant walk through a small wooded area. The rest is across open countryside, with many sections on tarmac roads.
