The starting point is the hamlet of Les Derbons, west of Pont de Quart (take the road on the left immediately after crossing the Drôme river heading south). Park at the entrance to the hamlet along the road.
(S/E) Cross the hamlet, passing to the right of a beautiful house with guest rooms, and take the wide path ascending to the right before a shed located on the same side. After about 150 m, turn left and walk along the vineyards. The path climbs quite steeply to another fork after about 600 m. Continue straight ahead, as the path on the right is the return route.
(1) From this point, follow the yellow/green markings. Turn slightly left, heading west. The path is still quite steep and winds several times, first in wide loops and then more tightly. At the various junctions, stay on the yellow/green markings. When you reach the Salaure plateau, turn left onto the wide path, still marked in yellow/green, which then leads to a large clearing.
(2) Leave the path, which turns to the right, and continue straight ahead across the clearing on the more or less marked trail (still marked yellow/green). After about 250 m, the trail turns left towards the south-east and leads to a beautiful mossy waterfall.
(3) Continue along the path to the track above.
(4) At the track, turn left and take the path on the right at the bend. This climbs gently and crosses the track again about 350 m further on. Continue straight ahead to reach Combe Obscure, then the signpost of the same name.
(5) Head straight ahead towards Pas du Loup. After about 400 m, when you reach the track, you will see a new signpost marked La Plaine; turn right towards Pas du Renard. Go through two wide hairpin bends and continue to the hairpin bend at the foot of Montagne de Beaufyn.
(6) Turn left (there is a rough path at this point). From this point onwards, there are no markings for climbing Montagne de Beaufayn. Walk along the clearing on the right just after leaving the track until you find a passage between the bushes; make your way roughly north-west, following the openings between the box trees, thickets and pines. This will take you to the ridge and summit of Montagne de Beaufayn (cliffs, be careful!).
(7) Admire the exceptional 360° view. Then follow the ridge path north-west and descend to Pas de Loup (signpost).
(8) From Pas du Loup, make a round trip (recommended) to the summit of Gavet via a clearly visible path heading north-west... or rest on the bench.
(9) At the summit of Gavet (signpost), admire the view over the Drôme Valley, then retrace your steps back to Pas du Loup.
(8) Take theGR®95on the left towards Col de Beaufayn - Die. At Col de Beaufayn (signpost), continue on theGR® to the right towards Die - Petit Justin, to reach the only tricky and vertiginous part of the hike, with a ledge a few metres wide between the rock and the void. Be very careful! For those who would like to avoid it, a detour is possible from Col de Beaufayn by taking the path on the left via Pas de Tripet (detour not tested by the author).
Once past the ledge, continue along theGR® to the signpost for Petit Justin. Leave theGR® at this point and take the path on the right (yellow/green markings). After about 400 m, the path joins a track. Turn right and follow the signs to Pas de Damiane.
(10) Take the path on the left towards Pas du Renard, continuing to follow the yellow/green markings. The Pas du Renard passage is picturesque, narrow between the cliff and the rock. Then, after several hairpin bends, you will reach a track (signpost).
(11) Turn left towards Ausson - Beauvoisin (yellow/green markings).
(12) After about 1 km on the track, at the signpost for Beauvoisin, leave the track and take the path on the right towards Ausson - Les Granges (yellow/green markings). The path first descends in hairpin bends and then more straight down the Beauvoisin ravine to a track (signpost).
Turn left, still heading towards Ausson - Les Granges (yellow/green markings). The track crosses the Beaufayn stream several times via fords without having to take off your shoes.
(13) Just before the signpost for Les Granges, take the path on the right. After another ford, the path moves away from the Beaufayn stream and is enclosed by a horse fence: go around it on the right and rejoin the path further up the hill. Follow the yellow/green markings carefully (there are several misleading trailheads). After a wide curve to the south, the path rejoins the track taken on the way up.
(1) Take the path back downhill and return to Les Derbons (S/E).
