The Pas des Baux circular route starting from Montmaur-en-Diois

The Pas des Baux from Pont de Quart is a lovely little walk. The circular route from Montmaur, which is much longer, allows you to enjoy both sides of the valley and visit the old village and its Chemin du Facteur.

Description of the walk

The circular route starts at the small cemetery in Montmaur-en-Diois, which is on the right 500 m after leaving the D93.

(S/E) Take the path northwards and, after 700 m and a small hut on the left, the path veers to the right. Descend for 100 m.

(1) Take the path that enters the woods on the left. Above the hamlet of La Tuilière, join a track that crosses the stream and continue to the fork.

(2) Take the path leading up from the hamlet. After 400 m, leave the path and take a track on the right heading north until you cross the highest of the vineyards. You will then reach the Chemin de Satayas, which climbs up into the woods.

(3) Follow the Chemin forestier des Baux to the ruins of the Baux forest hut.

(4) Cross the path, covered in boulders, via dry streams. The path becomes a trail and reaches the foot of a grey ravine, then runs away from it for about 200 m. Then take a trail that climbs back up to the left to reach the top of the ravine with the distinctive scenery of the Pas des Baux.

(5) Continue along the mountain-side path for about 100 m until you can see the small lakes in the valley and the hilltop village of Montmaur below. Look out for a cairn on the left.

(6) This cairn marks the path to a track a few metres below, which descends the Serre des Ubacs alongside a recently planted forest. You’ll come to a track; turn right and follow it for about 1,500 m to the old village of Montmaur. Strolling through this village is a real pleasure, all the way to the old church with its beautiful view.

(7) Return by skirting the southern edge of the village to take the Sentier du Facteur, which descends southwards. Leave it as soon as it reaches the vineyards, skirting them on the left to reach the road. Turn left to reach the small cemetery (S/E).

The climb to the Pas des Baux is very pleasant and the atmosphere there is quite special.
The old village of Montmaur-en-Diois: taking the time to stroll through this village is a real pleasure. Carry on to the old church to enjoy the view.

A very peaceful and pleasant route. Unfortunately, part of the path, near the forest track, has just been damaged by bulldozers as they widened the track. Large trees were blocking the path, which was no longer visible; thank goodness the GPS was guiding us.
Otherwise, the rest of the walk was brilliant!

Route taken on Sunday 26 April 2026 – sunny and very hot in the afternoon
We had a few doubts about the first part of the route, but eventually we found our way.
We couldn’t find the ruined forest house on the Chemin des Baux; just before the end of the path (which has been widened considerably for forestry work), you need to take a path that’s barely visible and blocked at the start by two pine trunks.
The rest of the route is well signposted. A visit to the old village of Montmaur is relaxing. The postman’s path is not recommended with children as it is narrow and not very well maintained.

We had trouble finding our bearings. It was a very hot day. Avoid this route in wet weather, as there are ravines where you have to find your own way through. Don’t miss the cairn on the left-hand side to head down the path. There is a drinking water fountain with a tap and an aluminium jug in the old village before taking the postman’s path. There are a few tricky bits on the descent along this path before the vineyards. It took us longer than expected: 12km in 4 hours 20 minutes (to be confirmed).

A few hiccups shortly after setting off, but no major problems; take care in wet weather or after rain, as the path gets very muddy

To echo Fredo 038’s comment,
-1 It’s true that it can get very hot in the valley during heatwaves. This route is a good alternative on windy days or if the weather is overcast on the peaks.
-2 Avoid during the thaw or in wet weather as the climb is at the foot of the cliff, from which stones or boulders may fall.

Hello,
We did the hike in sweltering heat, but it’s well worth it as it offers a beautiful view of the valley and the magnificent cliffs overlooking it. To start with, I’d say that after crossing the first stream, you need to go round the vineyard plot to the right, going down a little and then back up; the start of the path in the woods is quite inconspicuous but easy to find. The path is very shaded and very pleasant until you rejoin the forest track after La Tuilerie. The forest track has very little shade and, in my opinion, is the most tedious part of the hike. On this track, you cross several very deep ravines, which leads me to say that you should definitely not do this hike after thunderstorms. After the last ravine crossing, you come to a mountain path that now climbs steeply through the undergrowth and you reach the Pas des Baux fairly quickly, where you can enjoy a beautiful view. The return to the Old Village is fairly quick and, once again, offers very little shade. We’d hoped to find a fountain to cool off at in the village, but it’s clearly been dry for quite some time. What a shame! An orientation table at the edge of the village is worth a look. The descent along the postman’s path is quite steep and slippery, but that postman has my utmost admiration. I hope he had a donkey to help him up the hill! That said, on the way down, it must have been the postman who had to carry the donkey! We didn’t meet a soul the whole time we were out walking, not even heard a bird sing. It’s a real haven of peace.
