The Glandasse balconies starting from Valcroissant Abbey

A pleasant walk, through woodland all the way, which will take you to the foot of the impressive Glandasse cliffs. Be quiet and keep your eyes peeled; it is not uncommon to spot ibex and chamois. This is a walking and hiking trail, marked in yellow and green, with a section of the GTV (GR®®95).

⚠️ 21/04/2026: 2 km before the Abbey, the road is closed due to a landslide; it is currently not possible to access the start of this walk.

Description of the walk

Access by car: on leaving Die towards Luc-en-Diois, turn left after the Renault garage, towards “Abbaye de Valcroissant”. After 3 km on a small winding road, park in the abbey’s large car park.

(S/E) Head eastwards. At the first sign as you leave the car park, follow the signs for “Le Dôme – Col de Ménil”. Navigate a series of hairpin bends and continue to the next sign.

(1) Continue straight on towards Le Dôme and Col de Ménil. You will reach a four-way junction at an elevation of 1021 metres.

(2) Turn right towards the Comptoir à Moutons. Pass the small spring of the Fontaine de Juillet and the Pierre des Sacrifices in succession.

(3) Turn left onto the path to tackle the steep climb of La Palle, which leads you to the Comptoir à Moutons.

(4) At the signpost, take the path on the right which descends to the foot of the cliff, follows it for about 700 m, then veers off to descend along the ridge of the Serre de Cologne and reach the Col Fauchard at an elevation of 909 m. There is no signpost at this point.

(5) Continue the descent to Col Fauchard.

(6) Ignore the path on the right and head straight on to reach the Col de l’Abbaye at an elevation of 849 metres, where the route joins theGR®®95.

(7) Take the signposted path on the right towards Pas de la Roche. This path meets a track several times, cutting across some of its bends before reaching Pas de la Roche and its car park.

(8) Head up the road to the right towards Valcroissant Abbey and return to the abbey car park (S/E).

The highest point on this route is Comptoir à Moutons at 1,520 metres, not 1,646 metres. Then you start the descent. The elevation gain is 992 metres, not 1,156 metres.
A very beautiful hike. Perhaps not suitable for those who are afraid of heights. A little daunting on the path under the cliffs

This route is obviously one of the legendary trails in our region.
The climb through the forest is an undeniable bonus when the weather is warm.
There are a few points of interest where you can take a well-deserved break (the quarries, the July fountain, the views of the abbey, etc.). But the real reward comes as soon as you leave the forest and begin the final climb to the Dôme. It's more than a treat.
The descent along the ridge is also a moment of curiosity and amazement at the nature and shapes of the rocks.
In terms of wildlife, we didn't see any marmots that day, but there were a few young ibex around the "sheep counter" and the majestic flight of vultures in the sky.
A very beautiful hike. There are no technical difficulties. Taking their time, hikers who consider themselves average, if they are well equipped and have water and snacks, will be surprised to reach the top and enjoy this magnificent scenery.
Thanks to the author.

Magnificent hike, alone in the world. A real treat. For the descent, do not follow the GPS route but the yellow route. The path seems to have changed. Thank you.

Hello
Date: 25/05/2025
I would like to report a discrepancy between the technical data sheet and my elevation profile (created using the Visorando app).
There is a 914 m elevation gain and loss (return to the starting point) and not 1100 m as indicated in the technical data sheet
A magnificent route, taking up a large part of the climb to Glandasse, which leads me to believe that the route can be frequented.
Chamois are guaranteed under the Comptoir à mouton, and there are lots of swallows' nests in the walls, with the adult birds providing a constant cleaning service at this time of year.
On the way back, from the Col de l'Abbaye, descent on sight (thanks to the Visorando app!) to reach the Cabane Josseaume, a marvel (maintained by the association "Tous à poêle", https://www.tousapoele.org/les-cabanes/v, etc.) and return to the starting point, which is more enjoyable than following the GR forest road.

This forest route from the Abbey follows the path that leads to the summit of Glandasse, known as Pié Ferré. We leave it to take the Glandasse balcony path, turning right at a place called Le Comptoir à Mouton to walk along the cliffs, go to the Col de Cologne, then the Col Fauchard, and turning right at the pass, return to the starting point. It can be a variation for the return journey when climbing to the summit of Glandasse.
On the way back, simply rejoin the path on the left at Le Comptoir à Moutons.
