Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite the Auberge de l'Espinouse in Fraisse-sur-Agout.

Red and yellow markings of the GRP Tour de la Montagne du Haut-Languedoc

(S/E) Take the Allée de Frênes between the inn and the car park. Leave the village, pass the cemetery and follow the Route de Murat. The road enters the woodland and runs alongside the Agout, climbing gradually with two sharp bends to the left. After the second sharp bend, cross a path on the right.

(1) Take the path which descends to follow the stream. Pass a small beach. Continue to the road.

(2) Cross the road and continue straight ahead. This semi-private path (right of way) passes in front of Campsalés and crosses another road. TheGRP® markings lead to the hamlet of Les Hers.

(3) Walk past the hamlet and its ruins. At the Y-junction, take the right-hand branch to reach a T-junction.

(4) Turn left and head straight on to the track at elevation 932. On the wide forest track, head left. Ignore the first path on the right, then stop at the second.

(5) Turn sharply right. Keep heading generally south. At the bottom of the path, cross the Rieugrand. Pass through a gate with an electric wire, then head straight on towards a concrete ford over the Agout.

(6) Cross the ford. Enter and leave Pont d'Agout. Note a communal oven on leaving the hamlet. Stay on the road until you reach the wayside shrine. After the cross, veer left onto a path. Head back towards the stream.

(7) Pass a memorial cross, then the sewage treatment plant. Enter Cambon via the Grand Rue.

Red and white markings of the GR 71 Grande Traversée de l'Hérault

(8) Leave theGRP® and follow theGR®71. Leave the village via the D53 and, at the Y-junction, turn left. Keep heading generally south-west through open country until you reach a small clearing at an elevation of 941 metres.

(9) From this clearing, take the path opposite, heading due south. At a cistern, at an elevation of 1004 metres, on the Espinouse plateau, cross theGR®7and theGRP® Tour de la Montagne du Haut-Languedoc.

Signposting:GR®7red andwhite, and GRP red and yellow Tour de la Montagne du Haut-Languedoc

(10) Leave theGR®71. Pass under high-voltage power lines, then reach a junction. Turn right, leaving aPR® marked in yellow.
TheGR® andGRP® routes merge on this track leading to the Col de Fonfroide, at an elevation of 973 metres, in front of the D14, with a tourist facility and a wayside cross on the right-hand side.

(11) At the pass, cross the main road carefully and continue along the wide track opposite, between a memorial stone and some picnic tables. The markings will lead you up to the Col de Montplo, at an elevation of 1038 metres.

(12) Turn left and pass by the base of the wind turbine. Head generally south to climb up to the Col de Riède, at an elevation of 1064 metres. The track loses a little altitude as it reaches the bend, near the Grand Col.

(13) The path, to the left at the bend, leads to Mont du Saliassous for a 360° view.

(14) Viewpoint. Retrace your steps.

(13) Continue to the left. TheGRP® passes by the Rivieyrals pond. At the inverted Y-junction, keep going straight ahead. Cross the Rivieyrals stream and then, shortly afterwards, a tributary of the stream. Descend to the T-junction, near the Col de la Pinchinière.

Yellow markings

(15) Turn right. At the next junction, leave theGRP® and follow thePR® (yellow markings) straight ahead. Stay on the wide track which leads to the road at the Col de la Bane.

(16) Walk to the right for about a hundred metres across the hikers’ car park, then take a path branching off to the right. The path runs alongside the Ruisseau d’Escandes to a wide track, in a bend. Turn left, cross the aforementioned stream and reach the Y-junction.

(17) At this La Baysse junction, head diagonally left. No signposting until the next point. The track joins the D169. Follow this to the right and you will reach the Col du Triby.

(18) In the bend at the pass, take the straight path to the right, past the recycling bins. Rejoin the
GRP Red and Yellow Tour de la Montagne du Haut-Languedoc.
Follow it to the left. The path, through the woodland, returns to the D169. Cross the road, then take the wide track to the right towards Les Bessèdes for about fifty metres.

(19) Turn right onto the path leading to Prat d'Alaric and its thatched farmhouse. Take a detour to admire the farmhouse and its thatched roof. Continue northwards. On the road, turn right and head for the crossroads with the wayside shrine.

(20) At the wayside shrine in front of the D169, head downhill to the left. Pass close to the sports ground on your left. In front of the wayside shrine on the D14, the village church comes into view on your left. Continue downhill, crossing the bridge over the Agout. Stay on the main road leading to the car park, opposite the Auberge de l'Espinouse (S/E).

A lovely walk; the view from Mont du Sialassous is stunning, and it’s best to choose a cloudless day – which, unfortunately, wasn’t the case for me. Otherwise, apart from the distance, which is quite considerable, this walk is straightforward and very enjoyable. However, there are a great many trees that have been snapped or uprooted following this winter’s storms, so if you set off in bright sunshine, there is much less shade.

A lovely walk with no major difficulties, apart from the distance perhaps...
We combined it with the walk around Lake Vézoles and the ‘Path of Legends and 1,000 Steps’, camping at Lake Vézoles – a total of nearly 45 km over two days. The signposting was excellent, the views were breathtaking, and at this time of year, the countryside is simply magnificent.

A two-day hike, with an extension to Lake Vezoles (at least 4km extra, and a further 5km if you include the walk around the lake). We were able to swim there and camp under the stars. We returned to Fraisse the following morning, arriving around midday to explore this pretty village and have a bite to eat. Despite the intense heat, the hike was pleasant as we spent most of the time in the forest, and we made the most of the plentiful and delicious wild raspberries and strawberries!

A lovely circular walk that allows you to choose a different starting point depending on the season.
For our part, we recommend setting off from the pretty little hamlet of Cambon in warm weather, as the PR (yellow markings) route does.
The car park next to the campsite offers safe and easy parking.
The paths are more open, offering beautiful views over the Jaur Valley.
Best done in the morning, especially in hot weather, as there is a lot of walking through the forest later on.
It really is a lovely walk, even though there are quite a few sections of track between the Col de Fronfroide and Fraïsse.
The climb back up from Fraïsse on the road isn’t too dangerous as it’s not very busy, and the descent towards the Agout is very refreshing.
We completed the route in 6½ hours, including a short lunch break by the Agout after Fraïsse.
There are no difficulties and the elevation gain isn’t huge.
A real treat that we’ve already done twice.

A wonderful walk in the autumn sunshine, with vibrant colours all along the way!! It wasn’t difficult, though the distance did make it quite a challenge; it treated us to some lovely discoveries as we passed through picturesque hamlets and villages, as well as splendid views of the valley. A real treat! Thank you very much for the route.
