La Salvetat-sur-Agout - La Maison de Payrac

This is the most fun-filled day with the summer activities at the Maison de Payrac.
Rock carvings, geobiological and floral curiosities line the path.
The shores of Lake Laouzas offer lovely spots for a picnic, and its crystal-clear water is perfect for a refreshing dip.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: A journey of discovery through the Monts de Lacaune

Description of the walk

Start in front of La Pergola.

(S) With your back to the hotel, turn right and retrace, in reverse, the route taken on arrival the previous day. That is to say, follow the Esplanade des Troubadours to the stairs, then go down them. At the bottom, on Rue Montée du Brisaou, turn left and you’ll find the wash house on your right. Go round it, continue for about a hundred metres, then turn left into Impasse Lot le Tarras. You’ll see the farm machinery on your left.

Red and yellow markings – GR®653 – GRP® Hautes Terres d'Oc

(1) Take the path on the right. On the road, continue to the right. You will come to a menhir, near the Y-junction, with a wayside cross.

(2) Take the right-hand fork. Follow the GRP® markings, ignoring all other paths, whether to the right or left.

(3) At a place called Cas, continue straight on. The road takes a few circular routes before entering La Moutouse and ending in a cul-de-sac at the exit.

(4) After the Les Trèfles lodge, continue along the track which curves to the left. The track winds its way along the edges of several woods before entering them. In the undergrowth, it climbs gradually, with a steeper ascent after Picarel.

(5) A wayside cross marks this T-junction, in front of a large rectangular clearing. Head right for a return trip to the rock carvings at Rec d’al Bosc. Look out for the faint path that branches off to the left towards the rocks.

(6) Explore the site of Al Rec d'al Bosc, which features numerous engraved rocks. Retrace your steps back towards the wayside cross.

(5) Walk a few metres past the wayside cross.

Yellow markings: “Following the Wild Child”

Turn left. Go round the hilltop and, a few dozen metres further on, cross a path leading off to the right. Head down in a straight line to La Clédelle, at an elevation of 936 metres. The path continues to the left, then curves left again to reach the Col de Gorce.
Do not go all the way to the road.

(7) Turn sharply right and head down to the road, ignoring the paths branching off to the left and right.

(8) Head down, keeping to the right, towards the Laouzas dam. Cross the dam. At the end, take the steps on the right, following the sign for “En suivant l’Enfant Sauvage”. Climb up to Goutimpère, and go past the buildings by about 50 m.

(9) At the bend, take the path on the right. On the D62, turn right. At the first junction, turn left, then left again, towards the Maison de Payrac. Pass the Pradas crossroads. Further on, a large sign at the Y-junction indicates the direction to follow.
The track makes a first turn right then a left-hand bend. Leave the road at this bend and continue along the path opposite. The sign, “En Suivant l’Enfant Sauvage”, is located behind a gate.

(10) Follow the path which leads onto a road at the foot of a large oak tree.

(11) Turn right towards Payrac. As soon as you enter the woodland, there are numerous attractions along the way to the Maison de Payrac itself (E).
