La Salvetat-sur-Agout - La Maison de Payrac

This is the most fun-filled day with the summer activities at the Maison de Payrac.
Rock carvings, geobiological and floral curiosities line the path.
The shores of Lake Laouzas offer lovely spots for a picnic, and its crystal-clear water is perfect for a refreshing dip.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: A journey of discovery through the Monts de Lacaune

Description of the walk

Set off from in front of La Pergola.

(S) With your back to the hotel, turn right and retrace, in the opposite direction, the route you took on arrival the previous day. That is, follow the Esplanade des Troubadours, reach the steps and go down them. At the bottom, on Rue Montée du Brisaou, turn left and you’ll find the wash house on your right. Walk round it, continue for about a hundred metres, then turn left into Impasse Lot le Tarras. You’ll see the farm machinery on your left.

Red and yellow markings – GR®653 – GRP® Hautes Terres d’Oc

(1) Take the path on the right. On the road, continue to the right. You’ll come to a menhir near the Y-junction, marked by a wayside cross.

(2) Take the right-hand fork. Follow the GRP® signposting, ignoring all other paths, whether to the right or left.

(3) At a place called Cas, carry on straight ahead. The road takes a few circular routes before entering La Moutouse, ending in a dead end at the other end.

(4) After the Les Trèfles lodge, continue along the track which curves to the left. The track winds its way along the edges of several woods before entering them. Through the woodland, it climbs gradually, with a steeper ascent after Picarel.

(5) A wayside cross marks this T-junction, in front of a large rectangular clearing. Turn right to make a round trip to the rock carvings at Rec d’al Bosc. Look out for the faint path that branches off to the left towards the rocks.

(6) Explore the site of Al Rec d’al Bosc, which features numerous engraved rocks. Retrace your steps back towards the wayside cross.

(5) Walk a few metres past the wayside cross.

Yellow markings: “Following the Wild Child”

Turn left. Go round the hilltop and, a few dozen metres further on, you’ll come to a path branching off to the right. Head straight down to La Clédelle, at an elevation of 936. The path continues to the left, then curves left again to reach the Col de Gorce.
Do not go all the way to the road.

(7) Turn sharply right and head down to the road, ignoring the paths branching off to the left and right.

(8) Head down, keeping to the right, towards the Laouzas dam. Cross the dam. At the far end, take the steps on the right, signposted “En suivant l’Enfant Sauvage”, and you’ll reach a fork in the path.

(9) Take the path on the left and, almost at the end of it, follow the track on the right which runs alongside the departmental road before joining it. Continue along the road to the top of the hill.

(10) Take the hairpin bend onto the path on the left and reach a fork at the bottom of the valley. Turn right, follow the small stream and reach a crossroads. Take the second left, towards Payrac, and at the three-way junction that follows, keep right, towards La Maison de Payrac, then reach a hairpin bend to the left.

(11) Follow the path which climbs up to the Laouzeto menhir statue, then head back down to the road you left earlier.

(12) Turn right towards Payrac. As soon as you enter the woodland, there are numerous attractions along the path leading to La Maison de Payrac itself (E).

I’d like to clarify something about the end of the route. From the Laouzas dam, go up the steps following the yellow PR markings, but after the bend at the top, the route is blocked by a ‘private property’ sign and a new yellow PR route has been marked out from there. It initially runs parallel to the D62 before joining it for about 500 metres; then turn left – the path follows a small, dry stream bed, barely cleared – before eventually joining a track on the right and continuing until it meets the old route towards Payrac at the crossroads.
One further point: the house in Payrac is only open on Saturdays and Sundays until 1 July; we arrived that day just as it opened.
