The Forest of Arques la Bataille

Hike in the forest of Arques la Bataille, a beautiful beech forest.
Pass by the Saint-Étienne pyramid or obelisk to enjoy the magnificent panorama of the Arques valley.

Part of the path is no longer maintained ( see the Dieppe news article).
In the meantime, I suggest an alternative route starting from point (11).

Description of the walk

Departure from Moulin d'Ancourt on the banks of the River Eaulnes.

(S/E) Take the small bridge over the river to the left of the mill. Follow the path, cross the bridge 200 metres further on, and continue along the path until you reach a fork.

(1) After 300 metres, follow theGR® on the left. You are now on a beautiful, wide path.
After 800 metres, you will see a small path branching off to the right, from where you can see the Hoquélus farm.

(2) Go up this path which runs along the edge of the forest. Climb for about 2 km, passing plots 79-81-85-86-87, then the path turns to the right. At plot 78, on the right, go 30 m and take the hairpin bend on your right which goes uphill.

(3) Follow this path, which winds through the forest 20 metres from the valley on your right. After 800 metres, you will come to an open space. Take the path on your left, which goes straight ahead. Chemin de Rouval to Quatre Quartiers.

(4) Cross over and take the path on your left marked Chemin de Fremare. After 60 metres, take the path on your right and continue straight ahead for about 500 metres. At the crossroads, follow the path on the right to the road and take Chemin Duquesne opposite, on the other side of the road.

(5) Pass the Montariol beech tree, a remarkable tree, after 500 metres. Continue along the path until you reach the crossroads after 600 metres. Turn left and follow Chemin de la Commission, which descends.

(6) Turn right onto a path that goes uphill (GR®) between plots 16 and 12. Follow it to the top of the hill. Follow the main path (Route de Biron) for 400 m. Take theGR® on the left and continue to the end of the path. When you reach Route de Sully, turn left and continue for 300 m until you reach the right-hand bend.

(7) Take theGR® de Pays on the right. Follow this path for about 1,400 m and join the Chemin de la Pyramide. To see the pyramid, take the path on the left at the car park, go past the dam, and you will find the pyramid in the meadow. Enjoy the magnificent landscape.

(8) Retrace your steps and follow the road on the right. Take the path on the left after 200 metres and follow it for about 2,500 metres. Do not take the paths on the right or left; follow the ridge. Be careful at the end, where the path turns right. Take the small path on the left, which descends to join the road.

(9) Cross the road and take the path a little higher up on your left. The path climbs for 200 metres and branches off to the right. Follow this path (Route des Ligueurs) for 800 metres.

(10) At the end, take Chemin Ango on your left (you will see the playground in front of you), continue for 800 metres and you will arrive at a roundabout (Rond du Congrès).

(11) Take the first path on the right (after plot 49)GRP® Yellow and Red
After 20 metres, take the small path on the left (at plot 63) marked in yellow and red.
After 250 m, at the end of the path, turn right (end of plot 63), then after 50 m, turn left at the intersection. Continue straight ahead to the end of the path, then turn left at the crossroads.

(12) When you reach a small square, take the first path on the right of the main path at the end of the square. Follow this main path, ignoring the paths on the right and left, which descends into the valley.
Follow this path and after 1000 m, pass under the high-voltage power line. Follow the path to the right.

(1) At the fork you passed on the way there, leave the yellow-redGR® trail on your right and follow the green route 1 on your left. Follow the same route as on the way there to return to the starting point, back to the mill (S/E).

A pleasant walk on a summer’s day. A well-maintained route. A nice mix of forest tracks and footpaths. Some sunny sections, others shaded, but no tarmac. After Les Quatre Quartiers, the path 60 metres away is hard to find. Simply take the small black tarmac road to the right of Chemin de Fremare to rejoin the route. The path down to the pyramid is narrow; watch out for brambles. At point 9, take the path that climbs almost directly opposite. There is a single picnic table at Les Quatre Quartiers. Two remarkable trees are worth seeing.

In fact, I shortened and adapted this hike for a group of older people.

Here is the description:

From the road coming from Martin Eglise, at the Sainte Barbe forest house, turn left onto the gravel path towards the playground car park. Then continue straight on along the Route du Duc de Mayenne until you reach the Rond du Congrès. Turn right onto the gravel path. After a few hundred metres, turn left onto a path through the woods until you reach a gravel path; turn right onto this path and continue to the Rond point des quatre quartiers. Take the road opposite to Route Duquesne (gravel path). At Rond Duquesne, continue straight ahead on Route Henri IV, then continue straight ahead on Route La Pyramide. Before the end of the road, turn right onto a path through the woods for 1.5 km. At a crossroads, continue straight ahead, then turn right at the fork. At the gravel road, turn right. At the Sainte Barbe forest house, cross the road and head to the playground car park.

Beautiful hike through the woods with a superb view at the 'Pyramid'. It's a shame that the area isn't developed.

Very beautiful forest. No major difficulties.
From point 12 to the return point 1, the field completely covers the path.
To be redone in autumn.

The Arques forest is a paradise for hikers, especially senior hikers. We have simplified it a little. Here is a tip for finding your way around: go to the Duquesne roundabout and copy the map of the forest with the plot numbers of the woods in the forest. They are very accurate and perfect for finding your way around. I have this map available in JPG format.

A very beautiful hike in a magnificent forest where we often go.

There are many different routes, each one changing with the seasons.

Come back in a month or two when the leaves turn yellow—it's enchanting.

The routes suggested by Visorando are excellent and the maps are reliable. Well done!
